2.7td brakes are rubbish, upgrades possible??

Hi Lads so after hiring a van for a week and using it for towing while the car was getting fixed i really noticed just how pretty terrible standard terrano brakes are even with new pads/disks. what options are there for upgrading these?

All I can say is my previous T2, a 2.7Tdi used to try to throw me through the windscreen with the brakes. Best brakes I've ever seen.

it may be worth checking that the rear shoes are adjusted correctly and load valve is free mine are fine now i adjusted the rear shoes also i did replace the fluid and gave a good bleed

That load sensing bias valve is utter junk!!! Thankfully mine isn't fitted with one

If it does turn out to be that, take a look at the sexy upgrade Pete (makeitfit) did on the black pearl

But yeah a good bleed sounds in order

All I can say is I tow max weight regular (braked 4 wheel trailer) and it stops great no problems at all and it will hold on a hill on the H/B 4.4 tonnes, new pads and disks but did you check the slider pins, and how did you adjust the rear brakes? (the auto adjusters never worked) with the H/B off can you push in the tell tale buttons on the rear back plates? (H/B on tap the buttons to free them first they get stuck with debris) if buttons are not fully out then the cables are over adjusted and will effect the rear brake operation, Rick

wow okay well i didn't do my brakes i got my mechanic to do them as i have nowhere to work on my car living on a cobbled street. i will look at parts and I'm getting into my new workshop this week so will finally be able to work on it myself.

good to know they should be good as ill be towing a lot of stone next month for a job. cheers again lads.

Easy BUT dont forget to bleed the bias valve

Look above the axle. You'll see a dirty great spring attached to a lever and brake bias thingy. Looks just like a brake cylinder. On it at the top is a bleed valve :thumbs

We have 2 T2's, Suz's has brakes that stick you against the windscreen every time I touch them, where as mine is a lot more sedate.

When I drive only my truck, the brakes feel fine, and on the odd occasion I have had to make an emergency stop, my truck stops nice and quickly running true.

When ever I drive Suz's T2, though, which stops on it's nose at the slightest press of the peddle, I always feel my brakes are not up to scratch...

Since owning Suz's T2 in the last 8 months, mine has new front pads, rotors, and the rear shoes and cylinders are also new. Everything has been checked, and nothing is seized.... I have checked the vacuum, just in case, but that is fine, and I even changed the brake fluid.

I can not work out what the difference is between them, but hers definitely "feels" more positive, while mine is the one with nearly all new components.

That would give a spongy pedal but not a lack of stopping power, as long as you have pedal travel to go, Rick

I'll have a look later, mine is in for its MOT at the moment.

Mine are not spongy, and do work well, it's just the ones on Suz's car are a lot sharper/harsher.

I've just renewed all of mine. And now done around 150 miles. with the rears i took everything apart and cleaned especially the self adjuster thing and copper greased back up mow they're awesome even tho I'm running bigger tyres. So all in all they're really good for big heavy weight. Also when ordering rear shoes there was 2 sizes and mine were bigger of the 2 so perhaps thats the main difference
