Hi guys I'm of to north wales with the family next week and really hoping to take the mav but it seems so sluggish and seems to be hesitant when driving a little like its hunting when driving at say 35 mph in 3rd or 4th gear it's the same a say 55-66 mph in 5th

It seems so gutless and has no torque at all!

I know its a fairly small engine for the size of truck (LWB) but I was expecting at least a bit of go ?

In the last few months I've changed the plugs, leads, rotor arm, dizzy cap, fuel filter, engine oil, vacuum hoses, gearbox oil, diff oil, replaced cat with a 2nd hand one, new zorst.

Not sure what else to look at ?

I did have the 2.7 tdi before this which wasn't fast by any stretch of the imagination but was so much better to drive !

Any suggestions guys ?

the last 2.4 I drove went like shit off a shovel, throughout the gears, it was pretty awesome!

sounds like you have checked a lot, what about the ait filter and ducting? Have you had the injectors checked/cleaned/changed?

Rick (Solarman) is the expert here though, hopefully he will be along soon with his expert advice:thumb2

S/H cat  Check that to make sure it's not blocked . A quick undo will do :thumbs

I know some of the 2.4's can suffer from the exhaust manifold cracking so might be worth checking it & not sure if they suffer MAF probs like the TDI's do

I thought maf but dunno about the 2.4

Riiiiiiiiicky :nenau

:lol

Clean the Maf will be my first suggestion, two delicate wire bobbins, use a cotton but with alcohol and gently wipe, Rick

And a second thought any idea when the fuel filter was changed? it is under the chassis about the rear of the drivers door, Rick

take it to ricks , im sure he will sort it :thumb2

.

Hi guys what a pain in the arse the maf is to remove with the stubborn crqppy screws they were so tight !

Disconnected the egr valve too.

The air filter looks a little dirty but nothing major and the fuel filter was changed about 3 months ago and the truck has probably done only 200 miles in that time .

I haven't checked the injectors as far as removing them, they all look dry on inspection

The cat I got from cncfabs and when the mot was done the chap said the emissions were through the roof ???

I'll whack a another new fuel filter on to see if that makes any difference

Is chucking some injector cleaner in the tank worth a go ?

I haven't driven it since I've cleaned the maf so I'll see what it's like in the morning

Any other poss probs ?

.

Can I run without a cat ?

I'm not worried about emissions but didn't know if it has any ill effects on the engine

Also where the manifold meets the downpipe I could do with a new gasket but I don't wanna take it off as I bet I'd snap the bolts and I'd then be up shit street because I'd then have to take the manifold off and I bet I'd snap the manifold studs !

Would a slight blow there cause a massive loss of performance and hesitation ?

you can drive without a cat, and a slight blow certainly wont cause any loss of performance that's noticeable.

you say you cleaned the maf....how? I didn't think the MAF's on the petrol model could be cleaned....

weird, im surprised. I've had a look at one, they don't seem to be cleanable?

anyhoo, I wonder if its worth trying with someone elses MAF if they are close by, to help diagnostics?

.

Hi guys still not been out in the truck yet but as far as cleaning the maf I took it off the carb and done what rick said dabbed at the 2 little wires with a cotton bud and nail varnish remover.

This is how I cleaned my maf in my tdi 2.7 that had a hitachi maf

Not sure if u will make any difference mind you ? lol

Just out of interest why would the emissions be through the roof ? I had the mot done 2 weeks ago

What causes high emissions ?

Yes paper clip works just the same, your maf may not just have been dirty it may be failing, what happens if you disconnect it with the engine running, if you want to run over we can try one of mine, to prove or not, Rick

.

Hi rick that's a great offer thank you if I find some spare time between now and Friday night I'll pop down

If I disconnect my maf and there's no difference it's the maf am I correct ?

What would cause the emissions to be really high rick ?

disconnecting the maf it should die or at least run really rough, A bad maf will screw up emissions as will a bad lambda sensor In the exhaust front pipe about middle of front passenger door, not easy to test the Lambda, but Mot should have printed out the readings, Rick

.

Hi rick just been out and disconnected the maf and I went to pull away and it started bunny hopping re connected it and was fine again took truck out seems better oh and I replaced the air filter too

I does feel much mor responsive through the gears but it's still cold

Would there be anything that makes performance drop off when up to temp ?

Also rick I know you do a lot of off roading how does your snorkel work out ?

Noisy, better response etc ?
