Hi folks, long time no see, just purchased a nissan largo which has the same 2.4 petrol engine the terrano has, now the previous owners say the engine makes a humming/whining sound that gets louder the hotter it gets, i dont pick it up until the weekend so wondered if any of the knowledgeable folk on here have an idea what could be causing the noise?

Bloody hell how do stranger :thumb2

Hi Banshee, I thought i would stump up the member fee being as its a terrano engine, i joined a largo forum and they dont seem to know or want to answer whats going on, i know there are some very knowledgeable people on here so here i am :D

Long time no see, how is that little child of yours getting on with the problems, (sorry memory problems for me) any how engine wise cannot think of anything that can cause what you describe, I would be looking at ancillaries such as AC compressor/clutch, alternator, power steering pump etc, try and locate the source, a bit of rod placed on a suspect item and put to your ear often helps, Rick

Hi Rick, she's doing fine thanks, it was her 6th birthday this weekend (30th) she's recently had a transplant assessment and they have said she doesn't need one just yet but we are back in birmingham next month for more tests. Yes i was thinking it could be a belt pulley with dry bearings, as i said i dot pick it up til the weekend so am just looking for ideas at the moment. heres a pic or two of the beauty

Imported in 2010 and only failed 1 mot due to low tire tread

Glad she is doing good, nothing on the 2.4 that I can think of to cause your noise, but if you do need an engine I have a rebuilt one here you can have for nowt, (it will only go to the scrappie otherwise), are you still doing the vinyl signs? Rick

I've learnt from the past 3 years here that anywhere in wales is pretty much local :lol:lol

Welcome back nice looking Motor you must be well chuffed. I too am minded to think its an engine ancillary item that is the cause of the problem but it's hard to second guess.

That's a nice outfit mate!

I agree though I would have preferred the 4WD version, maybe the Terrano bits will bolt on to allow you to "upgrade" :nenau

Steve me old cocker :D
Not exactly as you / they describe but possible knackered cat ? Just done one and once binned the noises went. Also it runs better now as lambda sensor not being confused.
Power steering pump too as that gets good n hot .

Forgot they had a cat, so yes could be, I never had any probs with mine, Rick

Back to you again, yes the old owners on the largo forum said it was getting warm on the center console and the pump is in that area i think
