I know there are others her who have the same mysterious problem with the 2.7TDI misfiring at around 1900rpm.
Last Friday I happened to mention to a work collegue about this mysterios problem I have had with this irritating issue over the last 2 years which has cost me hours and hours of my time not to mention new MAF, filters loads a money :eek::eek::eek: and fault code readings which have led nowhere.... or lack of fault codes.

He asked me how much diesil I had in the tank and proceeded to measure out with a pipette - a clear liquid which he had in a bottle. He then put this miniscule amount of liqid into my fuel tank. It was so little I just humoured him as it was so unlikely to do anything.

The journey home didn't produce any noticable results but when I took it for a 30 mile run the next day, I began to notice the engine was running a bit sweeter - it seemed to get better and better and when I performed the rev from 800 to 3,500 - there were no judders from the engine!!!!!! :clap
It now starts much easier, runs smoother and the judder has gone !!!! :thumbs:thumbs:thumbs

and the magic substance in the bottle .... is ....... cetain:nenau

I don't know?

I don't know what cetain is ..... but it has made a hell of a difference!!

cant u just ask your mate:nenau

He's a mate of a mate who works at an oil refinery :nenau

I've looked up what cetane is ( may have spelt it wrong ) but unless I'm looking in the wrong place .... it don't tell me what the chemical cetane actualy is. :nenau

wikipedia below says :

Cetane number or CN is a measure of a fuel's ignition delay, the time period between the start of injection and the first identifiable pressure increase during combustion of the fuel. In a particular diesel engine, higher cetane fuels will have shorter ignition delay periods than lower cetane fuels. Cetane numbers are only used for the relatively light distillate diesel oils. For heavy (residual) fuel oil two other scales are used CCAI and CII.

In short, the higher the cetane number the more easily the fuel will combust in a compression setting (such as a diesel engine). The characteristic diesel "knock" occurs when the first portion of fuel that has been injected into the cylinder suddenly ignites after an initial delay (once ignition occurs, all the remaining fuel burns smoothly as it leaves the injector nozzle). Minimizing this delay results in less unburned fuel in the cylinder at the beginning and less intense knock. Therefore higher-cetane fuel usually causes an engine to run more smoothly and quietly. This does not necessarily translate into greater efficiency, although it may in certain engines.

Cetane is a collection of un-branched open chain alkane molecule that ignites very easily under compression, so it was assigned a cetane number of 100, while alpha-methyl naphthalene was assigned a cetane number of 0. All other hydrocarbons in diesel fuel are indexed to cetane as to how well they ignite under compression. The cetane number therefore measures how quickly the fuel starts to burn (auto-ignites) under diesel engine conditions. Since there are hundreds of components in diesel fuel, with each having a different cetane quality, the overall cetane number of the diesel is the average cetane quality of all the components.

I wonder if it's just masked a problem by increasing the cetane value and my engine may revert back to its old ways once it has become too diluted in the fuel tank. :(

Centane is like 4 star fo petrol the higher the star the more bang for ur buck so the higher centane no. Of diesel thw more bang for ur buck:thumbs

your not wrong but 0.15 in a ltr of wvo/derv makes a hell of a lot of difference.
been using acetone for 1000nds miles in all my cars, even petrol.

ok so the product to buy is called vegi boost it increases the cestain value of your veg oil or diesel what ever your running its a conmon additive for those in the wvo world

Ive tryed this. Didnt notice much diferance

Vegi-Boost combustion enhancer is available in 1000ml cans (the smaller cans have been phased out) for people to create their own specialty fuel. It is essential to anybody using vegetable oil as a diesel fuel and will improve performance and help protect both the engine and the environment. Vegi-boost is a cetane improver and is added at about 0.1 % volume. Just a tiny amount has a large effect. It contains nearly 100% 2-ethyl hexyl nitrate which aids detonation inside the engine combustion chamber, enabling vegetable oil to be used more readily in a diesel engine. Also great if you're thinning veg oil down with petrol - it will restore the cetane value of the blend.

For using vegetable oil in diesel engines
Help prevent global warming
Reduces smoke
Increases power and fuel economy
Easier cold starting in Winter
Compensates for blends with petrol

The magic substance is pure cetane and it came from an oil refinery. I am running my Terrano on normal Diesil, I have tried various suppliers in case the supermarket diesil myth holds true but as you said - it requires a very tiny amount to make the large difference. I have been warned that too much and the engine will run like a bag of shite.

am i right in thinking that "cetane" is a measure not a substance? like watts or kelvins? you can a thing to improve cetane but cetane is not a 'thing' :nenau
