am i right in thinking that
"cetane" is a measure not a substance? like watts or kelvins? you can a thing to improve cetane but cetane is not a 'thing' :nenau

correct which is why were saying its a cestain booster adding the magic potion raises the cestain level and improves combustion

Exactly the same as I found when researching it. I am told by Mr X that this is the substance added to the fuel after it has been pre measured by the analyser department, it is an exact measurement, if the cetain value is exact, the engine will run to its maximum performance and efficiency. Apparently additives post blending do very little to enhance the fuel and in allot of cases cause damage to fuel pump seals and exhaust valves. :nenau

If you believe all that bull shit you will believe anything, total, rubbish, Rick

Well, the guy who told it to me is a petro chemical expert who has sorted the problem in 5minutes, he has come up with a technical explanation and he has expalined why fuel additives in certain cases are bad for engines. He didn't use the disrespectfull terminology you have used tho.

Please accept my apology, I was in fact replying to an earlier post that held the opposite view, I should have quoted the post but did not, Rick :doh

is cetain a measurement in diesel fuels like octane is in petrol? i know that bp and shell both do a "superdiesel" which has a higher cetain level than standard diesel. ( and costs about 12p/l more) so can you buy a cetain booster to add to veg oil? surely it would do the same as just adding a bit of unleaded???

It is a measurement and a chemical... can't get my head round that one. :nenau
The measurement is critical because additives affect the flash point, burn duration and combustion quality.
This particular aditive lowers the flash point - If you add too much, it saturates and you get the effect of too advanced timing which does big end damage, hot exhaust valves are also a problem the other way.
If you know what part of the ignition process is deficient then you can choose an aditive to supliment and bring the process back into the desirable region but in most cases it disguises a fault or you are just trying to max out as much power as you can from what is going to be a short lived engine.
The problems people run into when using aditives is that some of the ingredients or effects of the ingredients are duplicated by the properties of the aditives already in the diesil and cause unforseen problems. It is also very important to measure supliments carefully and not overdose - substances such as Naphtha can cause damage to rubber seals in the fuel system.

In other words - my Terrano 2.7TDI is running very well now but the true test will be when I fill up tomorrow, wait till she goes through her fuel filter and see if she goes back to square one.:(
