Hi all, just a quickie for those with the 17" alloy wheels. Just found out this afternoon that the holes for the studs have steel inserts in them for the nuts to seat into. These easily drop out, wonder how many people are driving around with the, missing? They fit with a spline but I was wondering if one of these thread lock glues would be a good idea? What's everyone's advice?

Deffo needs to be in so thread lock away bud, I reckon it will do the job!
Very important though as the insert stops the alloy from getting chewed up.

And all because the botching garage lost two. When I went back down this afternoon they found the two missing inserts in the bin!

They should cease trading with immediate effect, they are not fit for purpose, surely trading standards should have some power? Rick

Thread Inserts

Methinks part of the reason they fall out is due to Galvanic corrosion. Alloy wheel - steel insert - battery effect over time aided by water, salt & wheel cleaners.

I had a similar issue with the centering inserts on a motor a few years back. In the end I cleaned up both surfaces with a wire brush, coated the contact surface with Tiger Seal then tightened the wheels up. I figured as well as being a good adhesive it would also create a layer between the two metals to slow down the corrosion.

It lasted for about 3 years until I sold the motor an old W124 260E that had some Pimp my Ride Alloys on her when I bought it.

Yes it had crossed my mind about the reaction between both metals too. Seems an odd idea but they can't be the only company doing this. Think they need something to glue them in so to speak.

Rick, as for the garage. It's all in hand now, photos and old parts. Hopefully they'll get their collars felt pretty soon.

I have 5 of these stored in my shed. And a shiny chrome spare wheel cover:naughty
Probably going to sell them as I doubt they'll ever go back on:thumbs
I'll check to make sure the collars are all present first.

Before I bought a set of tyres for the project truck I'd of bought em. I still fancy a stainless cover too:thumbs

I've had these inserts drop out on my 3L. Put them back using locktite about four years ago & it seems to have done the job.
First time I've ever come across inserts like this.
