is the alternator input fixed to the output shaft of the engine.

or is a belt drive used, thinking could up or down gear the
ratio.

just to give you another project , a mate and i were talking
about building a go kart, having an old basic genny on board
but using a battery and motor as an electric transmission

thinking by of a sinclair c5, with power option really.

then look at regenative braking from drive motor back into
battery, following hybrid car and bus technology.

anyway time for my medication....

I'm thinking of using pulleys. I have a mate who works at a place called Galloway industrial and he'll sort me out with belts and pulleys

It's not a bad idea about that go cart, a friend and I stripped a kids go cart and fitted a Volvo 740 starter motor and 12 v battery.....ahh those were the days:lol there's a straight flat road outside my house that we use as a test track:D

The speed (rpm) / amps are in the manual, it gives three different speeds, should help with the set up.

The real trick is to make as near silent as possible, then you may get away with using it when and where you wish.
Quiet should be the main aim of the game.
It poses some interesting challenges, but nonetheless achievable with some ingenuity.
If you can get it to exhaust into a small drum of water it will be as quiet as can be.Just under the surface will do nicely.
Wash the tank/system out with Meths. The evaporation helps dry out the water residue.

Thankyou for the responses guys, keep em comming:thumbs I was out this afternoon working with my dad and seen a welfare unit with a big 230V diesel generator built in it was running a cummins engine :naughty. I'll put some pics on. Gave me some ideas for my 12v system :thumbs

now this is a generator:sly:sly:naughty:naughty

i got some ideas from it for my little one, this big one had a Amp meter, volt meter and it also said the voltage load on the generator, pretty cool, out put is

wow perkins takes me back to 80s when was popular / only
option as a bigger diesel in green ovals.

think the early austin rovers diesels were perkins too, maestro etc.

Is that Gen Set for sale? how many hours has it done? Rick

It ain't for sale. It was at a construction site, we were only vacuuming the sh1t out the septic tank near it. I had a quick look when no one was about:augie

got the mower going today 'sort of', drained and re filled with engine oil, but it aint right, it won't rev, cuts out randomly and runs at a low rpm, it only revved well 5 seconds before it ran out of petrol:clap, took its head off and it looks like new:eek:, but the head gasket has started to go:doh, would this cause its problem?

replace it if it looks doddgy, no water to keep in so it'll be a cheap fix. Try changing the coil to get it runing properly, or just cleaning the magnet might help.

Thanks, I cleaned the magnet and magneto assembly but didn't make a differance, could be the carburettor?

Only mentioned the magneto becuase that's what was wrong with mine. I replaced it and it's been fine ever since.
It could be the carb. fiddly little buggers to service but can be done. I would try cleaning it allout with carb cleaner and blasting all the pipes through with compressed air first before taking it apart, especially the pick up pipe from the tank to the carb. also check the gasket between the carb and the tank

My Briggs and Stratton based lawn mower needs the blade as it acts as a flywheel. I have kept this going for well over 20 years.

The air filter, if blocked can cause poor running.

The fuel tank where the carb fits uses the rubber diaphragm to act as a fuel pump, so be sure there are no perforations in it.
Check all airways etc.

With the drive on the bottom, this will make the generator rather top heavy, especially when you start it, so make sure it has a wide base.

With a standard car alternator, you run the risk of blowing the regulator when running it with no load, as the output voltage can be quite high.

A good old fashioned car dynamo doesn't need excitation, but doesn't give high outputs.

Good luck,
Rustic

Cheers, what if I fit a small on board battery?

Yes that would help to sort it, you could try a small say fiesta type battery, as long as it can take a charge, it should work.

But be aware, when working near batteries that are charging or discharging, there is a plume of hydrogen and oxygen mixed in a ready to explode blend, just waiting for the smallest spark.
Which could be from even jump leads.

This is the reason why they say when jump starting a car, red lead to battery, earth to engine, so as not to produce a spark near to the battery.

Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Rustic
