If you have a manual for it and know which is the egr valve they usually crud up the hole where they bolt on if you get some carb cleaner and something to clear the crud out it should cure the problem as long as the egr valve is still operating.

Thanks smegg I thought it would be off an earlier one i am negotiating one as we speak I assume it just a matter of setting up the stop solenoid and the advance solenoid my one is an auto I am not sure if that makes any difference to a mechanical pump though.

To be honest I think its time to swap it for a mechanical pump and dump the complicated junk.I am assuming the pre inter cooler has the mechanical pump.

I cannot see any damp patches Sean and pressure is not dropping at the lift pump.It is staying solid i think I will change the lines anyway mate. there are two brown 6 pin relays under the bonnet if I pull one of them the whirring in the the pump stops so it must power up whatever is playing up...

Its a Bosch vp37 by the look of it. Just had a look the 96 one it has the same pump but its not fly by wire.
