To help others on this site, do you know the make of the pump, they are often Bosch, but may be something else.:nenau
Its a Bosch vp37 by the look of it.
Just had a look the 96 one it has the same pump but its not fly by wire.

Hi did you get the pump from an earlier one?hi, mate sounds like the problem i had with miine it does have a timeing moter inside [not sure if thats the right term for it] all sorts of things can affect the system mine had a habit of not restarting in a particuler asda that had a system that sent a signal to the trollys to lock the wheels it would turn over all day but no fuel at injectors, today got it running after fitting a mech pump fires up soon as i press the button, bit of inj knock but a bit of fine tuning will sort it, the elec pump i took out was a bosch but ive seen zexel elec pumps on ebay, [just thought may be mine just prefared tesco!] anyway you,ll get lots of help from the gang on here . just curios but did your last one have a mech pump.
Forgot to mention, in all other respects it does sound like leaky fuel lines, look for a damp patch near drivers side rear wheel chassis rail.
To be honest I think its time to swap it for a mechanical pump and dump the complicated junk.I am assuming the pre inter cooler has the mechanical pump.I'm not well up on diesel pumps but could it be the shut off solenoid not switching back properly? :nenau
Thanks smegg I thought it would be off an earlier one i am negotiating one as we speak I assume it just a matter of setting up the stop solenoid and the advance solenoid my one is an auto I am not sure if that makes any difference to a mechanical pump though.hi bob, yes mine was off the earlier one its not hard to do,[if you have to] just make sure you get the gear wheel with pump and also you need a pedal and cable, timbo gave me a lot of help and advice if you look at the recent threads, fuel pump, you,ll see how i stumbled through. good luck.
The pump is off now so we will find out when I decide what to do next.LOLOh, now you say it's an auto :doh
Are you sure there's not some simple switch / solenoid fault to do with gear selection etc. Just a thought
