    Electrical advice needed

OK, I've just done the same and get a reading of zero also. If I reconnect the DMM probes to read up to 200mA and set the range to 0-200mA, I get a reading of 36.8mA. What do you get? If it is zero then your multimeter doesn't work. Andrew

    Electrical advice needed

Let's take a step backward here and pause for breath .......... If the battery voltage falls quickly (below 12.7V) when it is not connected to the car then it is goosed - end of story. Go and buy another battery. If the battery is not goosed but the voltage falls quickly when it is connected...

    Electrical advice needed

As suggested by someone else, your best bet is to connect an ammeter (DMM on a 10amp current scale) in series with the battery - and then start pulling fuses until the current falls to zero. One thing to note - if the battery is good and fully charged (12.7v) but drops to 12.4v in a very short...

    Electrical advice needed

If you cannot turn over the Pug engine using jump leads from a (fully charged) Mav battery, it strongly suggests a bad contact on the Pug somewhere between battery +ve, starter, engine block, earth strap back to battery neg. Again, you can confirm that by switching on the Pug headlights and...

    Electrical advice needed

11redex, Just to make sure I understand correctly .......... How do you know that the battery was flat? Was it just that you couldn't turn the engine over - or did you check the voltage across the battery? If it will not turn the engine over, then switch on your headlights and try to turn...

    Squawking from front

Just a quick update. I've been out on five short trips today - including a trip to Tesco. Not a squeak - definitely fixed. Twas mud. The brake pedal action near the top of travel is noticeably smoother too. That was an easy fix, wasn't it? Andrew

    HD Caravan Tyre

Another issue here is that if you replace the car tyres that were on the caravan from new with 6 or 8 ply reinforced or commercial tyres, the side walls are stiffer and they run hotter unless you set a higher inflation pressure. Running much hotter could increase the risk of failure. Have you...

    Squawking from front

Last time I used the 4wd for real was on Dere Street last November. The semi-auto hubs seem to work fine. It did occur to me that it might be lack of lube in the hubs (unlikely but possible) and I've driven around a few times recently (not in 4wd!!) with the hubs locked just in case - no...

    Squawking from front

It was one of the things I checked when I had the wheels off yesterday - not that.

    Squawking from front

Thanks folks, I've checked most of those over the last week or two - apart from the caliper sliders. It was only yesterday that I pressure washed all the nooks and crannies in & around the brake calipers. It's the first time I've done that since the 'Troll was up to its axles in mud on Dere...

Oil pressure swiches and ballast resistor

It's hand in pocket. I'm on my 4th HP oil pressure switch from new - only just learned about the ballast resistor. The switch is about £20 IIRC - no idea how much the ballast resistor is. Andrew

    Squawking from front

My 'Troll has developed an odd squawking noise (a bit like squeaking, but lower pitched). It comes from the front nearside wheel area. It's a wheel speed noise - starts when you set off, repeats with wheel rotation - squawk squawk squawk squawk sort of thing. It doesn't happen when I...

    Patrol insurance

Sounds good. How much do you pay? Andrew

    Patrol insurance

Yep, just seen that. My bet is that you only have minimum cover when actually on a greenlane, even if you have a fully comp policy. I think they use greenlaning as a marketing ploy but actually offer exactly the same cover as other insurance companies (apart from Swiftcover). I used to use...

    Patrol insurance

There is one in Rochdale that sounds similar - Thornham Lane. It used to be a RUPP but now, after the NERC Act, is a restricted byway. It has lots of houses on it, also a pub and a school - but (even though they do) it is illegal for members of the public to drive on it. The has more to do...

    Patrol insurance

I'm not sure that Adrian Flux offer insurance for offroading at all. They do offer fully comp insurance to folks that use their motors for greenlaning (i.e. ON public roads not OFF them) but I doubt that the cover includes damage to you own vehicle whilst actually driving on a greenlane - worth...

    Patrol insurance

Old roads that the tarmac machine missed but that are still legal to drive on - often called green lanes. See: www.glass-uk.org Andrew

    Patrol insurance

I'd be amazed if any insurance company offers fully comp on green lanes - Third Party at best, I think. Practically, if you drive green lanes, you take the risk of having to fix it if you wrap it round a stone gatepost (as I once did). My concern is more that I want to be able to prove that...

    Patrol insurance

There is a bit somewhere in their terms that caused me to worry about it and then ask. This was maybe three years back. I ended up in a great long multi-email discussion, as they didn't seem to know what an unsealed public road was. I remember that they asked for some examples (which I gave...

    Patrol insurance

Did you ask them if they would provide cover for vehicles used on unsealed public roads (I did .... and they won't)? Their prices are *very* competitive if you never use the 'Troll for greenlaning. Andrew
