Another way to get to the boot menu in W8 is to hold down "shift" while clicking restart on the login page.

I'm not sure there's anything in the BIOS that will help you Rick. Try doing the same again but hit F8 rather than delete when you see the Asus logo. Should bring up a boot menu where you can choose "safe mode"

Could be something as innocent as a stuck key on the keyboard. With the machine off, give each of the keys a sharp press with the intention of freeing any stuck ones. A stuck key could be sending a constant keystroke and blocking the action of other key presses. Worth a try. Ian.
