Sounds to me as if the pump has an air leak, probably at the connection into the 'van. Try smearing the inlet seals with cooking oil or if that doesn’t stop it then something thicker like butter. If successful then it proves the fault. This is only a temporary measure as new seals ('O' rings ?)...
