Finally got round to updating the firmware on the Pioneer SPH-120DA head unit (giggity), and solving the Bluetooth audio problem. It was nothing to do with the firmware, I had to disconnect my iPod to allow the Bluetooth to work. So instead of an iPod for stored music I'm now using a 128GB USB...
