Its actually not that far out. The automatic on standard tyres does an indicated 90mph at 3000rpm, so if he was driving an auto he'd be doing an indicated 120mph (!)....so unless his speedo is seriously shot.... The manual does just under 3800rpm at indicated 90mph so at just under 4000rpm...

Whatever else it might be, its 100% symptomatic of your rear brake shoes having disintegrated on one or both sides. The bits of loose lining then move around inside the drum, sometimes getting trapped and causing excessive braking, other times freeing up and resulting in reduced braking effect...

That may be the case but I don't believe for a minute that involves the snap rings......I mean common sense says that would just be plain stupid because they are weeny little pieces of shite and no engineer with even half a brain cell would design such a ridiculous point of failure.....
