But with a rear facing intake, the engine vacuum will be fighting against the pull of a rear facing inlet. At slow speeds it will make little difference which way it faces.... but at higher speeds it most likely will :thumbs

With the extra length of intake tubing Pete's going to need all the 'ram air' effect he can get.... although facing it to the rear would stop the fly's and other debris entering, it would also be detrimental to the performance of the motor.
