My kind of instructions :D I'll do that probably tomorrow night :thumbs

Part 3

Got home early ish tonight and found a delivery from fleabay :clap
It's the air scoop I ordered for 12 quid :thumb2
So time to cut the roof open  that's the air intake on the left.
Masked around the area to cut after checking inside first. There's a roof reinforcer just in front of the marked area, and also one of those wire things that holds up the roof lining. So that's where it's going then :thumbs

Here you go one hole :lol no going back now :D By the way, that roof insulation stuff burns really quickly :lol I'm putting some in a box now for the next time I go camping
20121008_170240.jpg

Now I fitted the air intake moulding from inside the roof with lashings of Tiger seal :sly then a bunch of screws to hold it in place till the goo cures
20121008_182925.jpg

Typically it started pissing down after this :doh So I'll have to finish the roof scoop when it stops raining again, maybe if :augie
So what's a man to do? I stuck the duct on it and went for a spin ofcourse :lol I'm happy to report it works a treat and is bloody quiet too, ace

Won't loads of rain just piss straight down the scoop/pipe and fill up your airbox when stationary ?

Nope I put a plastic bag in the hole :lol
I take your point though, the roof scoop will keep most water out.Any water that does go down the tubes will drain at the low point way before the air filter box. In the nissan plastic intake there's a little one way water drain thing. As fitted to the T2 filter box :thumbs It lets water out but not in.

Ah right, I see.

I was wondering, as if i park my Terrano on a steep hill with the top facing uphill and the rain is heavy And wind assisted it trickles into my air box a bit, then its really sluggish until it clears or I take the filter off and empty out the puddle inside

Have you still got your old air filer box? If so get the drain gland thingy off it and fit that in your can :thumbs

Yeh that's in the garage.

Got a carbon enclosed induction box off eBay on at mo. it's shite tbh and a bit restrictive going to get a bmc cda or similar with better cfm

So u say there is a drain bung on the old box ?

Scrap yard failure :/

I had an aborted mission to the scrappy the other day as no suitable scoops came to light  Got a nice one for the intercooler mod, but that's another job :sly
So I got this fiberglass copy off fleabay
20121010_092859.jpg

It's too wide for my job but easily trimmed, so here's the cut n shut bit.
20121010_093027.jpg

Just measured what I wanted to end up with and mr angle grinder does his magic. Lay one piece over the other and copy the cut again, simples.:)
20121010_093249.jpg

Then spin it over and temporarily tape it together with gaffa tape or whatever.
20121010_095149.jpg

Cut some strips of glass mat and mix up some resin/hardner and slip slop job done. Takes as long as a cup of coffee :thumbs
20121010_100240.jpg

Back to work now so I'll trim it later

CONTINUED.
Then it's off with the tape and on with a bit of gelcoat filler to tidy the join.
20121010_170453.jpg

Sand until smoooooth then some obligatory black rattle can :)
20121011_120645.jpg

I then offered it up to the hole in the roof and marked where the bolts were to be drilled.
Then once roughly in place masked off the surrounding area. That's so when the Tiger seal oozes out the sides I can finger it off ( oo er missus ?) to a nice smooth finish and THEN remove the tape leaving a nice finished edge in theory.............
20121011_132339.jpg

Loads of goo round the scoop edge and on the bolt holes and stick it in place. tighten down the nuts so all the goo comes out the sides. Remove excess and then the tape. This is what I got so far
20121011_134739.jpg

There is a hole at the back of the scoop so when driving in rain I'm hoping most of the water will go to the back and then out over the roof. Similarly there's another water drain gland at the low point in the engine bay. If it'll stop raining long enough I'll do pics of those too, enjoy

Looks tidy mate :)

I'd have faced it backwards though, due to all the flys and crap that enters the air box

I did thinlk of that but the one on my T2 has been fine. I'm also going to do another one on the other side, Dakar stylee , just for air but eventually the radiator is going in the back :naughty

With the extra length of intake tubing Pete's going to need all the 'ram air' effect he can get.... although facing it to the rear would stop the fly's and other debris entering, it would also be detrimental to the performance of the motor.

it would also be detrimental to the performance of the motor.

Care to elaborate ?

Engine vacuum over rides and potential vacuum created by a rear facing intake

On a turbo you get no ram effect anyhow, although petes is non turbo at mo

But with a rear facing intake, the engine vacuum will be fighting against the pull of a rear facing inlet.

At slow speeds it will make little difference which way it faces.... but at higher speeds it most likely will :thumbs

At higher speeds, on the throttle I'd like to bet that STILL the engine draw will overcome the Minor vacuum (turbulance) from a rear facing vent

Btw my snorkel top faces backwards to no Ill effect

Higher speeds you say :lol
Agreed n/a at mo but will be turbo'd later. The engine vacuum is massive for sure with 4.2 litres to feed :sly
All that said any benefit I can get helps. The flys and birds and that were never a prob on the T2 and the filter is still in the air box :thumbs
Although the duct is now 2m long it is bigger than the stock tubes and also a much cleaner route, no tight bends or u bends etc
Oh yeh did I say, I like it this way too :D I'll be fitting a 2nd one on the other side too a la dakar :naughty

looks really nice, and glad you did not face it to the rear, at motorway speeds that wide flat aperture half way along the roof would have sucked real bad, Rick
