View Full Version : Spanish Patrols
Hi again,
As you all seem to have them new-fangled 4x4s with electric this and electric that, I thought I'd show you what passes for a modern Nissan in these parts, but I can't seem to add more than one image like all you clever clogs can. I'll have to do it by adding lots of replies:
This one is in use on the public highway:
And this too is in constant use, even though the driver's door doesn't shut!:
This one is the local painters and decorators' main form of transport:
This one has been sitting in the local mechanic's car park for ages. This is what tends to happen - he has to rescue one from the highway and then the owner doesn't have the money or the inclination to have it repaired so it sits in a sort of car cemetery.......
Here's another one in the same workshop car park:..

I'll bagsy the painters and decorators wagon with the Panama hat Doug!:thumb2
But looking at that bumper, they've gotta remember to put the bloody lids on before they go home for siesta...
Thanks for the pics Max!
Hi guys. @Tyrannosurus Doug - they are like gold dust nowadays. I wanted to buy one to do up for my daughter and couldn't find one under 2,500€. The locals just won't sell them.
If you want to, I'll add more photos as I see the cars on the road. There are loads of them! It is a bit of an obsession of mine. You can see mine on my album page.

Max
P.S. There is actually a superb factory codition LWB in the town - I'll try and get some photos.

Love the old motors when I went to Majorca I saw a blue BMW Meshersmitt that was parked in Alcudia that was being used daily !
Over here it would fetch a small fortune as they have gained cult and value status in the classic car market.

Yes mate more pics would be great, don't get caught stalking people in lwb patrols though :lol
@Don Simon - they are from all over - mine is a GI (Girona) plate - (never been there). They were manufactured in Barcelona under licence (like the Landy :flush: Santana which was made in Madrid). I prefer my Patrol any day.

More pics mate!!!!!!!!!!! Loads more!!!
Very interesting - over the Easter period all of the Patrols disappeared from the village like they all had an attack of shyness. Holidays are the times when family come to stay from Alicante, Barcelona etc. in their Mercs and BMWs so the Patrol owners put their trusty old friends out of sight! Anyway, here are some photos of one in the local workshop - it will be up for sale when finished.
RD28 2.8 litre straight 6 missing its hat. She got a bit hot apparently. The local mechanic is renovating her as a project.
Same interior as mine - pretty good for 25 years of hard work.
These are some photos that someone in the village has very kindly sent me of their LWB which I mentioned recently.
I have to say that this is the best example of a 25 year old Patrol I have ever seen.
I would guess that all photos were taken locally. If you want to see the area, have a look at www.beautifulcastril.com
Yes - it DOES snow in Spain!
I hope their heater fan worked (unlike mine!).

Good pics, the lwb is very tidy, I couldn't help notice the terrano on the lift though :D
@terranosaurusdoug - yes, we have all sorts here - Mitsis, original Landies, Gallopers (Spanish made Mitsis), Mavericks, Opels, and even the odd Land Cruiser. I like them all, but my true love is my RD28 Y60 1989 :thumbs

Have you had it a long time?
There seems to be mainly swb trols, am I right?
Ooooh - getting on for 18 years! She has 450,000km on the clock and the original engine. She's been a good friend to me (wish I could say the same about the missus!) and saved my and my daughter's life through strong construction. (We were T-boned on a green traffic light by a Renault Megane which was a write-off. The Patrol needed a new side door and sill only, purely for aesthetic reasons - the door still worked! They must have been moving as we were spun 180º into the path of a van).
You are right - there are few LWBs. Why? The SWBs are much more offroad friendly as not so slithery in mud and better ground clearance with shorter wheelbase. The LWBs are HUGE inside and I always stop when I see one to have a look. I suspect the price differential when new was enough to turn the farmers off the LWBs. Can't say for certain. I would guess that the SWBs outnumber the LWBs by 20 to 1.
Mine has a very low ratio box (4H) which will grind it up the steepest hills, which I tried once with my son on a nearly vertical dirt track - truly scary - we thought that she was going to somersault backwards!

Bloody 'ell that is pretty strong, surprising it survived a smack that, would probably be a write off over here.
The insurers wanted to write it off on the grounds that it wasn't worth anything until I showed them the car sales websites. I didn't want the money, I wanted my car back! There was also a dent where we spun round into the van. The panel beater said that it nearly killed him knocking it back out! Anyway, here's one I saw this afternoon.
It amazes me that the paintwork on these cars is still in some sort of condition. 28 odd years in the Spanish sun, which can strip varnish off wood as you watch it, which bleaches everything, which is so strong that you can burn yourself on the car's bodywork, which has been scratched by branches, rubbed against by a thousand goats and their horns, been frozen by winters, attacked by hailstones (yes, big ones like golf balls) and they still have a good layer on them! More photos to come as I see them!

Wow Max, you are a big Patrol fan aren't you. Nice to see older motors still on the road.
As for your truck saving your daughters life, I can really associate with that. My first Terrano that was a 1996 that we had owned since 2002 saved my wife. There's a thread if you have a look. Basically she was hit by a car coming speeding in the opposite direction on the wrong side of the road. Totally wiped the Terrano out but it saved my wife. Somehing to be said about owning a 4x4 with a proper chassis and rugged bodywork.

Great to see these motors and seeing so many older Patrols and Terranos convinced me to get a Terrano.
We had an immaculate T1 in our village, a beautiful motor.
If I get back to Spain, I'll definitely be looking out for a LWB high top Patrol.
Hi Jim
Totally agree - nice to have some metal around you. Even offroad, you find yourself skidding into a bank or rock - just reverse and carry on. Half the cars nowadays have plastic wings. I looked up a couple of old photos of the crash:
And the Patrol. I was using it for weeks after the crash while the garage was looking for a breaker's door (Spain isn't the speediest of countries!):
Thought I'd include a Patrol GR as it was in such good nick. You don't see as many of these as the original Y60s.
....and a nice codition Patrol that I saw in Huéscar last week.

Liking the pics Max, interestingly in the UK we refer to these Trols as Y60s, the ones you call Y60s are referred to as 260s over here.
Hi Jim
It is a great life if you don't weaken! No, seriously, I love living here and I love the countryside. I have lived on the coast in Murcia out of necessity but I much prefer inland, with the seasons, mountains and no tourists. Have a look at www.beautifulcastril.com . There are miles of dirt tracks which get really f**ked up by tractors when (if!!) it rains which are great for off-roading. G&T in the town is 3€ (Beefeter, Tanqueray etc. + Schweppes) and I pay 200€ pcm rent. Diesel is currently 1.08€ (92p per litre). OK, so you can't phone out for a pizza or a curry, but the food in the bars is cheap and veg cheaper in the supermarkets (2GBP approx per kilo for green beans etc.). You DO have to reprogram your chip so as not to expect so many luxuries - it is a simpler life. I'll shut up now.
@Barrbeast - Hi mate. Actually, I only picked up the Y60 thing when I joined the website, so have probably got it all wrong. Here we just call them 'Patrols', and in the rare event of seeing a more recent one, a 'GR'. They really haven't shifted many GRs here. Interestingly, a Spanish chap was saying today that they didn't sell because they were too expensive and that there were reliability issues - specifically the long cylinder head with turbo causing them to get hot and warp. The old Patrol was essentially a tractor with a dress so would (will) plough on eternally. Mine is getting on for half a million kilometres. :augie

Got ya bud, yeh Y60s are Trols like mine so what you'd call a GR.

The 260s were a Spanish built Trol that seems to have stayed in production with you guys long after the 160/MQ (UK version of the 260) was superseded in the UK market by the Y60.
Sounds like that chap is talking about the later Y60s that had the 2.8TD (can have head issues). Older Y60s like mine came with the a non-turbo 4.2 diesel, awesome engine :D

@Barrbeast - that is truly a great car! Beautiful! Here's another oldie seen today in the town, with a Badajoz registration, but I suspect it is owned by a local. Note the parking!!
@Barrbeast - love the snorkel! :clap
Question - do you have to modify the engine oil dipstick as well? Is there a risk of water getting into the crankcase otherwise?

There's a totally different attitude to parking over there, which I love (as long as it's not abused). Double parking was a regular thing in Madrid, and if you found your car blocked in you gave a couple of toots on the horn so the blocker could come and move their car for you. They were never far away.
A totally different attutide to many things, which I also love. I still get slightly affronted at being asked to pay at each round rather than the end of the night, and still get miffed at having to get up and go to the bar in the first place. Oiga!
Thought I'd slip in another GR...
Unusual colour for a Patrol....
This one seems to have retained its rear wiper - whether it still works is another question. The motor on mine was burnt out when I bought it some 18 years ago and I have never bothered to replace it. I think what used to happen was the blade getting caught between the door and the window thus overheating the motor.

Cheers bud but can't claim credit for that snorkel as it was the previous owner that fitted it but I did do a custom stainless steel snorkel on my previous Trol :thumb2
Dipstick is pretty well sealed for normal splashing around. I'd want to check for water ingress if I was in water near the top of the bonnet for a prolonged period but then I'd have other problems too as no truck is completely watertight :nenau (you don't want them to float)

What are they?, are they the same as the American pathfinder?

Yeh thats the one, lots of those in America, same chassis as the R20 terrano's we have, I've been reading through an American forum called npora for ideas for mods etc.:D
Well, there's a couple here that found their way into Castril...
this one is a '95 and is in great nick in spite of being the workhorse of one of the local builders.

OK - will keep you posted. Nothing at the moment as the mech is unwell. By the way, the Pathfinders are called 'Terrano I' in Spain.
Just one more Pathfinder in front of my favourite restaurant 'El Molino' in Castril (there are more photos in www.beautifulcastril.com ).
Just one more Patrol :thumb2
The radiator grille is completely different to any I have seen before. Maybe was an import instead of being manufactured in Barcelona.
Here are a couple I saw in Huéscar.
This one seems to have lost most of its front end!
Some more Trols for your delectation :lol
This one is in the workshop.
..and this one. I think I've run out of steam (and Trols) for this thread! Anyone interested in buying?
I like the first white one :thumb2
I see they got the panel beating hammer out to fix that last one :lol:lol
@micken - I reckon that AL 8029 P must have had quite a smack as those panels are heavy duty steel sheet. The passenger's door looks like it has deformed around the jamb and I wonder if the wing pushed the door back onto the jamb during the prang. :doh
I'll ask them next time I'm in the workshop.
I just can't help myself - had to snap this one although have seen quite a few more since my last post.
...and here she is from the side. Must be at least 25 years old. Nice nick. These and the Toyota Land Cruisers were built to put Land Rover out of business, so they were made with the best materials and they didn't let an accountant near the manufacturing process.
Thought I'd let you see a Patrol from when I was in Saudi. Year - 1983!

Short shorts and bell bottoms, niiiiiice :D
What you been upto max?, that one looks tidy :thumb2
Hi T Doug.
Yes, the early 80s!! That was taken on a diving trip to the Red Sea as I lived 21km from Jeddah at the time. '82 or '83. Nissan sold gazillions of Patrols to KSA in those days. They seemed to be the only ones that could pull themselves out of the soft sand. I loved the GMC Jimmys, Suburbans and K5s - see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnT_a1HWcM0 but they were too heavy for the desert and used to get bogged down. Mechanically incredibly basic - the clutch pedal was connected to the actuator arm with a rod. No danger of hydraulics!!...but nothing to go wrong either, I suppose.
I am out and about in Castril (www.beautifulcastril.com) so will photo more Nissans as you still seem interested.
