Totally agree - nice to have some metal around you. Even offroad, you find yourself skidding into a bank or rock - just reverse and carry on. Half the cars nowadays have plastic wings. I looked up a couple of old photos of the crash:

And the Patrol. I was using it for weeks after the crash while the garage was looking for a breaker's door (Spain isn't the speediest of countries!):

Thought I'd include a Patrol GR as it was in such good nick. You don't see as many of these as the original Y60s.

Liking the pics Max, interestingly in the UK we refer to these Trols as Y60s, the ones you call Y60s are referred to as 260s over here.

It is a great life if you don't weaken! No, seriously, I love living here and I love the countryside. I have lived on the coast in Murcia out of necessity but I much prefer inland, with the seasons, mountains and no tourists. Have a look at www.beautifulcastril.com . There are miles of dirt tracks which get really f**ked up by tractors when (if!!) it rains which are great for off-roading. G&T in the town is 3€ (Beefeter, Tanqueray etc. + Schweppes) and I pay 200€ pcm rent. Diesel is currently 1.08€ (92p per litre). OK, so you can't phone out for a pizza or a curry, but the food in the bars is cheap and veg cheaper in the supermarkets (2GBP approx per kilo for green beans etc.). You DO have to reprogram your chip so as not to expect so many luxuries - it is a simpler life. I'll shut up now.

@Barrbeast - Hi mate. Actually, I only picked up the Y60 thing when I joined the website, so have probably got it all wrong. Here we just call them 'Patrols', and in the rare event of seeing a more recent one, a 'GR'. They really haven't shifted many GRs here. Interestingly, a Spanish chap was saying today that they didn't sell because they were too expensive and that there were reliability issues - specifically the long cylinder head with turbo causing them to get hot and warp. The old Patrol was essentially a tractor with a dress so would (will) plough on eternally. Mine is getting on for half a million kilometres. :augie

Got ya bud, yeh Y60s are Trols like mine so what you'd call a GR.




The 260s were a Spanish built Trol that seems to have stayed in production with you guys long after the 160/MQ (UK version of the 260) was superseded in the UK market by the Y60.

Sounds like that chap is talking about the later Y60s that had the 2.8TD (can have head issues). Older Y60s like mine came with the a non-turbo 4.2 diesel, awesome engine

Question - do you have to modify the engine oil dipstick as well? Is there a risk of water getting into the crankcase otherwise?

There's a totally different attitude to parking over there, which I love (as long as it's not abused). Double parking was a regular thing in Madrid, and if you found your car blocked in you gave a couple of toots on the horn so the blocker could come and move their car for you. They were never far away.
A totally different attutide to many things, which I also love. I still get slightly affronted at being asked to pay at each round rather than the end of the night, and still get miffed at having to get up and go to the bar in the first place. Oiga!

Unusual colour for a Patrol....

This one seems to have retained its rear wiper - whether it still works is another question. The motor on mine was burnt out when I bought it some 18 years ago and I have never bothered to replace it. I think what used to happen was the blade getting caught between the door and the window thus overheating the motor.

Cheers bud but can't claim credit for that snorkel as it was the previous owner that fitted it but I did do a custom stainless steel snorkel on my previous Trol :thumb2

Dipstick is pretty well sealed for normal splashing around. I'd want to check for water ingress if I was in water near the top of the bonnet for a prolonged period but then I'd have other problems too as no truck is completely watertight :nenau (you don't want them to float)
