Well hello gang I've just subscribed without even owning a nissan! But I'm in the market for a jeep and have been looking towards a terrano as I only want to spend upto £2500. I will use my jeep for camping, fishing transporting my family around whilst towing our folding caravan dog walking, tip runs, a bit of spare time plastering etc. Unfortunately I have to work (boo hiss) and travel 336 miles every fortnight (car share) on motorway. I don't break speed limits just keep up with traffic, I used to do the work travel in a nissan interstar which was a superb van. The old nissan would get about 36-38 mpg but was slightly to big for every day life plus couldn't take me off road to my favourite fishing marks. I now drive a fiat sedici with a little part 4x4 system, but this car is proving to physically small but returns 46mpg.
What model terrano do you experienced terrano and 4x4 enthusiasts think would suit me, I like reliability...... Is the 3.0 terrano a gamble with the well publicised piston over heating prob....... Is the 2.7 tdi frugal enough to get at least 32 mpg on a motorway run. Is a patrol 2.8 a consideration. I could possibly be able to get used veg oil from work??
Questions questions lol

Welcome, and Nissan is indeed a good choice. If you're looking at veg oil then the 2.7 is the ony option and then ony with the Bosch fuel pump. The 3.0 is a bit quicker, a bit more refined a lump and a bit less thirsty, I believe.

Yeah I'm leaning towards a 3.0 l there is one for sale close to me but the lad is running it with the front prop missing?? Maybe hiding a front diff prob??? Or could it of been removed to disengage hubs?? Yeah I loved my nissan interstar and the wife's old micra was brilliant.

Welcome mate, everything you have mentioned as requirements would have led me to advised you to purchase a LWB 3.0 litre until you threw the spanner in the works about the veg oil.
The 3.0 will NOT like the veg at all and I've known 2 people kill fuel pumps due to it, one was running neat cooking oil and one was running what he believed to be very high grade BioDiesel, seems anything apart from pump diesel and they will die a death.
The 2.7 is still a very trustworthy engine, I run a 2.7 in my Commercial Van and run it on 95% cooking oil all year round without any real issues on a single tank and a heat exchanger plumbed in, keep any eye on my project thread below and you'll see my heated Eckes heated Fuel Filter fitted very soon with a nice little electric pump to prime it too with a 1 way valve in line (idea stolen from Bigbunny2007)
I'm only recommending the 3.0 over the 2.7 as I've recently purchased one for my Grandad and it's beautiful to drive, seems a bit more responsive with the horses and a lot quieter, no engine chatter as you get with the old style IDI 2.7 block :thumb2
Anymore questions just ask away, I'm sure we'll put you right fella

The bed is supported by boxes that sit in the rear footwell, sliding in and out isn't a problem at the end of the day or in the morning and there's nothing in the boxes that's needed when sleeping.
I'm looking at an alternative design at the moment if I can find some suitable bouble hinges, it'll be more robust and up yo double width.
Bosch fuel pump comes with a bosch MAF sensor.

Yeah I read your thread I could of bought a 3.0 this weekend but I wanted to check with you lot as almost every review site refers to this site for top advice etc. I have noticed at work that gallons of used cooking oil is just thrown away could it be cleaned and used, I do fancy a 3.0l though. The said car has gone now typical

Hi,
Better to loose a good one than buy a bad one.
You may already know/picked up the link on here but you can check the MOT history if any truck your interested in, very useful to know what work is possibly lurking under a nice shiny shell.

Depends how good the "feedstock" is mate, some stuff is that good that it can just be filtered down to 1 micron and de-watered and poured in other stuff will have nasties in it and will take a significant amount of time to get ready to use.
I went the whole hog at one point and learned to make 3 stage titrated B100 BioDiesel using Methanol and Potassium Hydroxide, I had a a processor, drywash tower, venturi and it was not neccasary for the Terrano at all, but at least if I switch vehicles in future I know I'll be able to just purchase all the kit again and start brewing :thumbs

With some fine tuning, the 2.7 can be ran on near enough neat vegetable oil all year round, if you do go for the 2.7 and venture down that route I've got that much info I could bore you to sleep

Hi welcome aboard, I've owned the 2.7 since 2002 until recently when it was written off. They are pretty bomb proof engines and you should get around 32mpg if you drive like a vicar:thumbs
As said 3.0litre is a bit more refined though Ive not driven one yet. I'm in the market for another truck and I'm not put off a 2.7 and I've noticed the 3.0litre is a bit more money too. I found the auto 2.7 to be less economical but a great drive nonetheless.

I would like to thank you all for your advice and a warm welcome your site deserves it's awesome reputation.
Why would someone remove the front prop of a 3.0 terrano?? What is worst case and probable scenario.
I joined a vw club a few years ago when I bought a b5 passat welcome was warmish, last year I considered another land rover so joined club they were rude from start.

If it's standard and not been modded at all, the 3.0 was usually only fitted to the later square headlight (mk4) which also had fixed hubs as standard, this means that even when 4WD isn't engaged the front prop will be spinning.
My money will be on the UJ's or Union Joints will have worn out on the prop itself and needed swapping as they were making a noise, that's best case scenario.
It could also point to issues with the driveshafts, it's possible that the CV's are disintegrating and clunking etc when cornering.
Worst case scenario, the front diff has gone, could have been neglected and not had fluid replaced and gone bang, could also be a problem with the transfer box on the gearbox, I've only ever known of one snap it's chain  but that was a real real off road workhorse on a farm.
Get them to put the front prop back on so you can see what it's doing for yourself, anyone worth their salt genuinely trying to shift the vehicle without trying to pull the wool over your eyes should do that, it's only 8 bolts

The later Terranos I think from around 2001 have fixed front hubs rather than autlocking hubs. The 3.0litre will be the fixed hub model. The uj's didn't have grease nipples on the later. With fixed hubs the front transmission including propshaft is turning all the time un like auto locking. Dozens of threads on the front hubs. My 05 plate truck had a worn out front propshaft, the uj's were shot but also they have a sliding joint on the shaft itself which was worn and had movement. The one you saw could very well of suffered this same problem or maybe removed to cover up another fault. I replaced mine from an earlier LWB terrano and had no problems at all though I know some members have spoken about different lengths of front propshaft. Who knows maybe I was just lucky and got the correct replacement.
Hope this helps and yes this place is cracking and well worth the membership. Take a look in the downloads section in quick links:thumbs

Easier to check the UJ's with it off if removing it stopped the issue, then rules out front drive shafts as they are still running, Rick

I'll leave the Terrano guys to advise you on the truck as I'm a Trol man!

That would obviously be the logical thing to do as it's already off probably leaning up the guys shed, if the UJ's show no sign of wear, I'd ask for it to be re-attached to the truck before the test drive so you could investigate whilst driving.
If it's not on the truck, there is no way I'd even consider going to see it as he'd have no way of testing the 4WD, and without 4WD it's about as useful as his van for his fishing trips

Sounds fishy mate!!! I'd suggest keep looking, it may not be a quick affair, it took me 4 months of looking, and physically going to see 5 before I settled on one for my Grandad
