I could do with a nice tow strap so that I can pull robobone out of the mud next time I go laning with him, he's sure to get stuck one day.

i went on a day out with robbobone and there was one particularly nasyty decent into a big trench of mud and rotting cow poo!

there was a big off road preped disco huge mud tyres, winch snorkel the works, only him and robbo took the chalenge on this descent!

who ended up pulling who out of the mire?

you guessed it the clown won and shamed the disco!

all hail robbobone!

Sorry but what has that to do with kinetics?

He could have used straps, chain or bar

While we are on this subject.......I have a normal towing ball, what should I have/use if recovering??

Very interesting ..... There seems to be varying and contradictory views about using towballs for recovery.

Without doubt the standard Land Rover supplied fixed height rear towing unit with either a towing ball or universal jaw and ball is the best for the majority of on and off road recoveries.
See: http://www.difflock.com/offroad/bowyer/ropes1.shtml

I wouldn't use a tow ball, like he says if it slips off it could damage the car.

A kosher recovery point is designed for the job and towballs are not - so using them is not a great idea. OTOH, how many would prefer that their vehicle remains stuck in the mud?

I was replying to Jim-T and sharing a funny experience, didnt mean to rub the green oval up the wrong way  and your right I dont think it was a kinetic strap i dont think the front end of a rusty disco would take the strain

You can pull me out anytime when i get stuck, and I do, if you don't your just not trying hard enough

In fact when I'm stuck I'm glad of any help, even cyclists or ramblers to push me

i have video proof that jim terrano doesnt need to go off road to get stuck

Robobone, that really depends upon whether you class Green Lanes as off road or not :? Strictly speaking I wasn't on the lane, more sort in the middle of the field
One day I'll have the chance Tony and I might just have to gloat

Can someone suggest what would be a better substitute than a normal towing ball??

The usual answer to this is a purpose made recovery point. Stuff such as Jate rings are available to fit Land Rover vehicles. The Nissan Patrol comes with recovery points as standard both front and back (coz they need recovering regularly? 8O ). I'm sure a Terrano owner will comment on recovery points for Terranos/Mavericks - maybe Frogisland4x4 is worth a look - they prepared the Patrols for the "Long Way Down" series.

There was dicussion on this and apart from using the manufacturers towing ring front and back it would be ok to use the tow bar frame work rather than the ball as this would be stronger.........please correct me if Im wrong but it sounds right.

Also you should have a good check of the towing points for rust, fatigue or just just to make sure they are still there 8O 8O

Ive started putting my stuff together, including my new strap and shackles.

****dont forget, "half a turn back" ****

Thor, i think the rear recovery point is for towing land rovers

nuff said........so I need to make sure it's sound first
