Well, I've been meaning to clean this wee filter since I read about it, so today I thought, "got a long lunch break, lets have a go in the work carpark" :homer

I came to the conclusion that some people manage to do this without pulling out the battery and power steering pump, etc., and my socket set with extension could reach so in I went. Bolt came out fine and I managed to hook out the spring below, but nae luck popping out the filter - how far down is it?

Needless to say I managed to drop the bolt down into the sump guard bit :doh and had to roll on the ground reaching blindly about for it. While down there I noticed fuel dripping out while the bolt was out of the pump - should this happen? Not sure if that's a sign or air getting in the fuel lines somewhere allowing fuel out or if it's just proof that the breather in the filler cap works well.

Anyone else's T2 wee itself while doing this filter?

I should add, I have now decided that just following the download's instructions are what I'll do in the future!!

Bin the bloody thing :thumbs

It was put in the early 1's as they used paper filters & this caught the paper when it disintegrated ;)

So not needed :D :thumbs

Done it to both of mine with no problems :D :augie :thumbs

p.s. I could do it without removing anything :D :augie :lol :lol :lol

Never had anything dripping from mine when I've cleaned the mini filter. I don't remove anything, I just use a long extension bar to go past the belts/power steering pump. If the banjo bolt doesn't lift away with the socket I use a telescopic magnet (bit like an aerial with a magnet on the end) to lift it away while watching I don't drop the two copper washers (one either side of the banjo union).

I then use a piece of wire bent into a small hook to lift out the spring, then using the same piece of wire lift out the filter - if the car has been sluggish and smoky the filter is usually totally blocked.

To reassemble I drop the filter in, then the spring, then with a light smear of grease to hold the copper washers in place I use the telescopic magnet to lower the bolt through the banjo union, using a long screwdriver to hold it in place while I pull the magnet away, tighten the bolt - job done!

Sounds complicated but it only takes about 15-20 mins all-in.

Is there a risk of bending the pipe attached to the union, as you tighten the bolt?

Or do you have to hold this somehow whilst tightening?

I like the idea of the telescopic magnet, I have one of those... Somewhere:nenau

No, just gently tighten ;)

I used a old CB ariel & bent then end into a hook & ran it through a magnetizer :sly :augie :D :thumbs

Brill,
Might just tackle the job in the next few weeks, since I may not have to remove the battery or the steering pump.

It's never been looked at in nearly 17 years, I'll take a picture of it when I find it, before I clean it.
Then it won't need cleaning for another 17 years I guess...:doh

Just been out to tesco, the wife says I never take her out these days..... :doh
Romance is never dead, anyway, they had a magnet on a telescopic stick, for just over £1 so I bought another one.

They are very handy, I also have a mirror on a similar stick and one of those flexible grippers where you press the end and 4 prongs come out, they used to be called pearl catchers.

I wouldn't be without my telescopic magnet now............:)
