Hi

I have a 1993 Patrol, 4.2 GR SGX. 115k miles.

There was a noise coming from under the gear levers that was a constant rumbling/knocking/chattering. It was apparent in neutral and went away when I put my foot on the clutch.

Also, on pulling off or going slowly, the car vibrates (around 1000 rpm) and it shudders when I turn the engine off.

It needed a clutch.

I took it to my local garage, they fitted a clutch. The noise is now MUCH WORSE. I took it back. They say the noise is louder because they "disturbed the gearbox" when they took it out to do the clutch. By the way, the owner of the garage told me that "it's nothing to do with me" and "you should put additive in it".

They say the noise/vibration is due to worn bearings in the gearbox. They have invited me to take my car back, they will take the gearbox out and send it to their gearbox people (Abbey Transmissions - Waltham Abbey, Essex) who will charge me £500 plus VAT for new bearings.

(Previously the garage have told me that the noise/vibration is "because it's a lorry engine" and "they all do it". Personally, I'm not buying either and I think the truth is that they simply don't know.)

I just looked in an old Parker's Guide and they say this model suffers from crankshaft rattle. Does that mean a new crank? How the hell much is that going to cost me?

Gearboxman - are you out there somewhere? Can you help please? Does anyone else have any ideas please? Does anyone know if there's a Patrol specialist in the area? (Hertford - but would travel to someone good).

I just spent £850 on clutch, brakes, oil change/filter change, MOT, general looking at. I don't really want to spend another £500 plus VAT and still have the noise/vibration.

Has anyone got any ideas/similar problem please?

gearbox noise

hi,
the problem sounds like a thrust bearing, very simple ,but should have been changed when clutch was done,
the garage dosnt know what there talking about by the sounds of it.
Nellie.

Thanks for that!

The first thing I said when I heard was thrust bearing. The garage reckon there was a thrust bearing in the clutch kit, and that they fitted it. I am coming to the view that they didn't fit the thrust bearing when they had the car apart to do the clutch.

Nice car you've got there!

Noisey transmission

Is the gearbox noisey when driving , if so does the noise dissapear in 4th Gear Call me to discuss options . £500 is too expensive for replacement Bearings
