hi guys just wondering if my x3 4500lbs winch will be useless come winter time should i need it ? i have it mounted to the front of my lwb truck and have tried it a couple of times and it worked ok slow but ok not.

i has also pulled my vauxhall vivaro on the flat again just to test it.

i dont do serious off roading where i'll need it to pull me out of deep mud but winter where i am has had some heavy snow over the past few years.

budgets are also dictating getting a replacement aswell.

what are your thoughts ?

paul

ok if a forward pull gets you out of trouble.

wouldnt it be better if feasible to be on a
mount can use front and rear?

If you're "stuck" it wont be enough:eek: 4500lb is only 2 tons, about the weight of the truck with stuff in it.Also that figure is only achieved on the first roll of the drum, after that the effective pull is reduced turn on turn. So if your "stuck" in a hole or some mud that figure will go right up
How much did it cost you? A good 12000 lb winch kit will be around £230 at the mo :thumbs

Surely it just needs a bit of schoolboy physics.....a snatch block will double the capability of the winch.

So you just need to find yourself a snatch, then block it. I can do that. :naughty

It looks like the capacity of your winch is the absolute minimum for pulling your own truck, as you discovered when testing on flat even ground. You will definately need to carry appropriate extra recovery kit to make it work effectively, i.e. a snatch block. Not all winches are really designed for bolting to the front of 4x4's for dragging them outta the mud! Some are for pulling little boats onto trailers etc.
Only you can judge your needs but just beware of the limitations. exceeding them can become very dangerous!

Fair play, 50 odd quid is about the price of a good snatch :naughty
