HI guys,

so I sold my Terrano to Monaro Pete, and I am now looking for a replacement and something a little different.

My first choice is a Shogun Sport, but my budget is tight so limits the amount worth looking at.

I thought it might be worth considering other softer 4x4s so I wondered if the X-Trails are worth looking at?

I like the look of xtrails but when ever I mentioned them on here people have put me off them. That said I've known one or two people with them and not had a minutes trouble. One thing I do know is that they don't seem to rust like terranos do.

yh...similar for me. though ive read a lot more positives than negatives.

I am not a fan of the interior but the more I look the more I like it and there are a lot more in my price range than the shogun...

I get the impression from reading around that there are no specific issues you don't get on other cars. COmmon problems seem to be calipers, turbo, timing chain tensioner and other niggly things....

hoping there are x-trail owners on her with some experience...

Go for the X -Trail I don't think the 2.5 engine in the shogun sport or L200 has the same reliability as other Mitsubishi

cheers Steve

from what I have read, the 2.5 was something to be very wary of.....

Well, for what it's worth.....my Sister had an XTrail 4x4 as a company car.

Lots of bells and whistles variant.

She had a daily commute across the Pennines from near Barnsley to Carlisle ish., and return, all year, every weather, for over 4 years........she loved it and swore by it to get her out of some serious situations.......:thumb2

I like the look of them, except for the low slung rear exhaust box.......:nenau

Sheila had a x trail sport dci turbo , amazing mpg and quite quick too , she loved it .

X Trail!!!! Stay away from that 2.5 unless you have a spare motor :lol

That's a hard choice I much prefer the shogun looks wise as I'm not struck on the trail... Are you going to use it off road??

If I was looking I would be going for a Toyota Prado 3.0l diesel, great trucks, very off road capable with diff lock.

no off roading - all I want is a basic level of ruggedness and help in the snow. XTrail seems to fit those needs. Reasonable height off the ground so should be ok mounting a kerb!

I admit, ive got quite excited about the prospect of an XTrail, the more I read about them. Had a chance to have a good look round one the other day - very odd driving position, and the centre dash is really weird, but ive come to really like that odd interior.

Essentially I want a tame work horse, I am leaning towards the XTrail more now since I found the MPG is around 39!

A chap I work with had a 54 plate xtrail. He tows a caravan and tells me he gets over 30mpg! Pretty good I reckon. It's very quiet too.
I think you're on the right track.
Must say though, I don't like the ones with the bars and lights on the roof.
Ian.

What about the subaru outback?

Lots of car for the money and you would hope tough with it.

39 MPG sounds optimistic, though possible I suppose if it doesn't have my foot on the accelerator.

sheilas x trail ( 51 plate 2.3 dci turbo ) averaged 47 mpg on the run to Norfolk

Clivvy some interesting comments on this thread, forget about the Freelander comments but plenty about xtrail and mitsys.

very negative feedback there, Jim. A few people have trouble with a car and damn every XTrail on the road.

Plenty of people say the same things about Terranos. I've read countless good comments about the XTrail but I will certainly take on those negative comments on board - I suppose like ANY car its all down to its history and current state. Cant see into the future, so its pointless not buying a car based on someone's "don't buy it" comments.

Yeah like every thing in life you are far more likely to hear about negative experience than positive. Good luck mate and give me a shout if you need a second set of eyes.
For what it's worth I quite like them too mate.

Banshee what's so bad about the 2.5, think it's the petrol isn't it.
