I have the opportunity to move back to New Zealand, my old boss has loads of work on and the offer is there.. I have no strong family ties here so basically all we have to do is sell the house and cars and go but this will be a one way trip and we wouldn't move back again... We have only been back in the uk for 2 years after being in NZ for 9+ years...we moved back thinking we missed the uk more than we actually did but I am sorry to say the uk isn't the same uk we left behind 11 years ago and it seems to be on a downward spiral, also alot of Europe is fast becoming a no go zone as far as safety goes..
I still love the uk and it has a lot to offer.
Now I am aproaching my mid to late forties I don't have the same brave go for it attitude I did back then although my heart is saying go, my brain is saying really do we really want to do this... The up side is I have a network of friends over there and bank accounts credit ref etc etc...
So what do I do, one option really aye???

We had 3 weeks in NZ a few years ago, I liked the place very much, had I not been in my 60's I might of thought of emigrating because the writing was on the wall re England, If you do not know after 9 years living there, then stay here, but you know really, only one word of warning, going back to an old employer does not always work, but life is what you make it, best of luck, Rick

ps I an sure Uncle Rustic will be along with some sound advice.

Ooooohhh, life changing decision......again....

The way I would look at it is what family do you have here, you kind of already answered that but do you have kids, what does your wifes family think too. Then you have to look at the future, retirement, pension. Do you have funds here to retire, do you have funds in NZ to retire.

If family and or money is not keeping you here then you have the freedom to move, and if you have the freedom then follow your heart...

I just wish I could move with you lol

I cant remember exactly though but was one of the reasons for moving back was that the work dried up. That also has to be a serious concern moving to the other side of the world with no guarantee.

Plenty of work in NZ just not enough skilled people to do it so no problems in that respect... Me and the wife are not close with our families.

One of the things I keep thinking of is retirement and I look at the guy over the road from me who retired early and does nothing.. We had a boat in NZ and went fishing as the missus loves fishing, now I could see myself doing that in retirement as long as we are healthy enough.

Solarman, I know what you mean about previous employers...

if i were in your position, i wouldn't have been in this country long enough to type your original question :)

unfortunately, my wife likes her family a bit, so I'm scuppered lol

i have family in Rotorua, so would love to go out there permanently.

Health would be the other one. I take it there is no NHS there so that side of things can be very costly. Are there any medical issues?

Just trying to think of serious things but I think you were never really happy moving back here so it seems your heart is set.

Admit it though, you just want to go back to get a Y60 :augie

Good luck making the decision but as said sounds a bit like you have already made the decision.

Is it possible to export your truck too:clap

As for europe, there's places in blighty that's a no go zone.

A very similar health scheme to the NHS runs in NZ but you pay to go docs around 25 NZd so £12.50 ish but generally if you ring up you can get an app same day. The health scheme is pretty damn good.. Well done mrk another good reason.

Mmmmmmmm y60....

Lee I'm not sure I could stand the smell of rotorua for very long, that sulphur smell makes me feel sick.... I was in Hamilton last time just up the way a bit from rotorua.

Ugly Duck cafe in a camp site in Rotorua, had the best steaks ever, went back many times mmmmmm, Rick

Agree with this. Get ya bags packed. What the worst that can happen. You end up moving back here again in 10 years time? I doubt it. Sounds like you've got plenty of help there if you need it from your friends who you can probably rely on more than family here. ( that's how it would be for me anyway).
Best of luck with your decision. If you need any company, sign me up! :thumbs

Health care would be my biggest concern, I have paid my national insurance all my working life in the UK and unfortunately for me, it is pay back time, in a big way, so good job for the NHS.

So what provision would they have out there if say... heaven forbid, you had an incurable disease, like me, at 60 years old.
My medication and treatment is probably costing more than I could have earnt it, you might be able, as an ex pat, to keep paying a nominal "stamp" over here, then if all else fails, you could return to the UK for full treatment, I really don't know how this would work, never done that, never been there.:nenau
I don't know how reciprocal medical care works with New Zealand.
If you have no family ties then I would certainly consider it.
Once I was asked to join our American friends in Minnesota, our mother company at the time, my wife and I discussed it, in great detail, and as our kids were coming up to GCSC's it didn't seem the right thing to do at the time.
I think my son was destined to be in the States, as after his Masters in the UK he applied for a doctorate in Colorado.
Your circumstances are totally different to mine and I would certainly consider it, what an exciting opportunity.

New Zealand return

Go Go don't think about staying here now . U k is on a slippery steep downward slope and will soon cease to exist a as a country and just become a district of Europe Prospects are far better in that area of the world with SE ASIA andChina expanding . There are also drawbacks but they balance out . The best thing is there are still a lot of wild off road adventures to go on , If I was younger and could persuade or leave!!! the better half I would have been gone 10+ years ago.
