Won't start!

Hi.

I have a problem with my 3.0 terrano. If it is started and only runs for a short period of time. Say less than a minute, it will not start on next attempt. And I then have to get a tow to give it a bump.

Anyone had a similar problem? And have a solution? Like the fuel is running back down the pipes??

Not sure if this might be causing my running issues. I have changed fuel lines and fuel filter housing in search for solution...... Is OK if runs for at least a few minutes!

Possible fuel starvation? What happens when it does run for the first min? Then what are the symptoms as it dies? Instant? Or coughing?

It doesn't die. Just won't start at all. Just cranks. It does cough a bit with plenty of smoke when its warming up!

Fuel starvation may be the reason. Check micro filter in IP banjo bolt. I had similar symptoms.

Doubt it's glow plug system.
My engine was throwing motor oil into air intake and after 6 month or so glowplugs started burning down one by one - due to oil burning on glowplugs, creating deposits and overheating GP.
Even with one glowplug working you can still start the engine, and once it started, it will work no problems.
It's more difficult to start engine with no GP, but still possible.
First thing to check is banjo bolt filter. Easy, just need 17 socket and extender.

Does the 3.0 need glowplugs to start anyway.Its direct injection the peugeot hdi dont even come on unless its like -5

I ran my 3.0L for over two years with a full set of non-working glow plugs, only really got hesitant when temps dropped below -10C.

Check the primer button on top of the filter housing is not being pulled down, indicating a possible restriction in the supply line.

The primer button should exhibit resistance when pressed.

Could also be air being drawn in on the supply line, it only takes a tiny hole/leak to let in enough air to screw things up. In that case I'd expect some white smoke from the tailpipe too.

What does the exhaust smoke colour look like?

Sounds like air is being drawn in somewhere, check fuel filter seal and drain is sealing properly. Check banjo pipe seal on the fuel pump.
