Trouble at the mill again, truck wont start. Had new starter motor and battery. Goes OK for a while then out of the blue trouble. its like the starter is jammed, last time it happened the spots wouldn't work and the radio went dead. I belted the starter with wood and hammer and eventually it started but had no power when you pushed accelerator, but once you got rolling you could feel the power surge back. Had electrical man out again he said starter OK and reckon it was head gasket on its way out. He played about with key in ignition for a couple of minutes and it started. said water on top of pistons and by turning engine it cleared it and allowed it to start. Im still not convinced, anyhow OK for a week and happened again last night. engine just not turning over I have tried doing what he did but nothing only a clicking from starter and on occasion the four way flashers come on, I'm still thinking electrics and an going to look at ignition switch soon so any of you bright lads got any ideas about it before I sell it for scrap. :nenau :(

Did it turn over every-time when he played with the ignition?

When you get the problem does it turn over every-time? Clicking from the engine bay every time suggests the starter has gone again, have you been water wading alot?

If you had water on the pistons there's no way it would turn over. Hydro lock  To check whip out the glow plugs and spin it over, if there's water there it'll be squirted out pdq :lol
Has your water level been going down?
Ignition switches are also known to piss about, so worth turning it very slowly to see if that helps.
Is the battery fully charged ie no alternator faults

Well just had cover off ignition switch couldn't see anything obvious put it back together and it started went for sort run came back will not start again. The symptoms are: starter does not turn engine over you just hear it try to engage the battery is new Bosh heavy duty. the starter is new £190 just before Christmas. If it is the ignition switch what's the best remedy were from and how much and if replaced do I need new locks as-well. Thanx for the advice so far. :doh:doh :doh :doh

Don't panic, the keys remain the same it's just the switch at the back of the ign key. About a few quid s/h replacement no idea new. Do a search on here it's been done loads.:thumbs

I've just gone though some of the problems on our technical page and looks very likely its the ignition switch, other members have had exact same symptoms like starting but no power and four ways coming on etc. They say just buy the back plate and not the hole barrel. What exactly is the back plate? :nenau

It's simply the switch part. It fits onto the back of the barrel. Just unplug the bugger :thumb2

Just go to Nissan ask for the electric switch on the back of ign barrel pay £40 with vat and fit it like I had to do on my truck 1 and abit years go:thumbs

its an easy job. If I remember correctly its only one small screw holding it in. ITs a little fiddly, but very easy. I got mine for about £12 off ebay, second hand.

but as there is a click in the engine bay it still sounds to me the starter is broken.

Id try and get a 2nd hand ignition backplate first or even borrow one from a mates terrano. Takes about 20-30 mins to replace.

Kept the covers off and fiddled with the plug at the back and can get it to fire up so its now very very likeley it is the ignition switch im at work tonight so tomorrow Ill start looking for a new one. Ill be gutted if it doesnt work but I have faith. Thanx alot lads Ill let you know how we get on cheers. :bow :bow

Probs with my old girl.Check lead from battery isnt broken, bypass with jump lead.also turn key slowly to here if it connects better.jd

Got the next couple of days off and now able to order new ignition switch, the nearest new one is at Gordon Lamb. Chesterfield £38.93. I get it tomorrow so hopefully back on road by lunch time:clap

will keep my eyes pealed then only a mile aways from me :thumbs

I had that problem with my peugeot partner, there was a bad contact on the cable from the battery to the starter solenoid switch. Loud clunk from solonoid & that was all:doh

Get your voltmeter, there should be 12v+ at the solenoid, keep the voltmeter connected & get someone to turn the key, if the volts drop very low, there is the problem.

I had been quoted for a new starter, then new ign swithch & new solonoid, honest auto elec tech showed me with a 12v bulb & two bits of wire with crock clips:clap

Cost 1 metre fat cable 1 battery terminal 1 hour, oh & a pint for the tech.:clap:clap

Well lads said Id let you know the outcome just fitted new ignition switch and its back to full power, problem solved, I bet if I had done this last year it would have saved me the cost of a new starter motor and new battery anyhow got them now so thanx to all who helped with the diagnosis. Until the next time CHEERS :clap :clap :clap :D :thumb2
