having been threatened by the little nazi in the local garage that wifeys truck would be 'instantly failed' because of a windscreen crack, I dug out the attached link which might be useful....

http://www.motuk.co.uk/manuals.htm

Doesn't mention cracks specifically but in the Windscreen section it talks about damage within Zone A etc..

This crack is about four inches long, several months old and not growing, and is located right at the extreme bottom left hand corner (nearside) of the screen - anyone any experience of being failed on such a thing?

Trouble is if it does, I need to get the bulkhead sorted below (which has rusted, causing the glass to expand) and then might have to fork out £200-300 for a new screen if I can't browbeat Autoglass into doing it as an insurance jobbie...

And yes I know I should do it, but the truck is in semi-retirement and used as dog transport!

Might pay you to fix the bulkhead, then see if they can put some " repair" resin.

i have severel cracks in my transit screen, been there since i purchased vehicle (4yrs) when i changed the front wing and was using air chisel they seemed to grow, but it has always gone through the test although one guy did verbaly say they might spread, still the same but screen is now going white around cracks, i supose i will have get it done soon on insurance £70,:doh

you went over a large pothole and the screen cracked.

Must have been body flex.

A local guy did mine for £145? I think (I wasnt covered for winscreen damage:rolleyes:) TESCOS INSURANCE READ THE SMALL PRINT !!

Blimey, you're right, its all coming back to me....:doh

Most people don't realise what part the window pays in modern vehicle apart from keeping the wind and rain out.
Hence the cracking when going over bumps as the window is a structural part of the body.

Get the bulkhead fixed then the window, if you have an accident the corner could fold up like a wet cardboard box.

You're right rossco, but in this case its rust expanding under the edge of the glass thats causing it to break.....and the thing is only used as local dog-walking transport and feed collection so never driven at speed, so I'm not overly fussed at this point.

Fortunately in vehicles with separate chassis' the windscreen doesnt take anything like the stress it does in a monocoque construction (remember the early freelanders :lol )

I've had chips in windscreens and expected a fail and theye turnedup with advisories  after the test.

Best spek directly with the person who's going to put their sig on the certificate i think, even if you go somewhre else :thumb2
