Wipers broken????

Hi

New to 4x4's but the terrano has been a godsend these past few days with all the snow in the south east... however was out in it yesterday and a bloody great lump of snow shot off the roof onto the wipers (which were on) and stopped them dead in the middle of the screen!! Stopped the car and turned it off but the wipers were stuck

Since then..... now the "flick" wipe only works if I hold the switch up...the delay setting now works as a normal wipe and wont turn off unless I shut off the ignition :doh

Any ideas people???? Is it the motor or the switch:nenau:nenau:nenau

Or maybe wiring/relay problem??? Happy to change whats needed but dont know where to start?

2002 TDI model...... IS an all doing switch on the right side of the steering column, has delay twisty thing on the end... hope that helps

It doesn't sound like a fuse, on the TD F16 runs that, what happens when you do a screen wash? you get the wash and how many wipes, or does it continue?

Something has had an electrical overload, first guess could be the switch , or it could be the controller.

There is a feed to the motor that relies on a contact in the motor to park at the end of a cycle, so the wiper should be at the bottom of the screen when off, unless you are turning it off at the ignition.

With the wipers still running and your wiper switch in the off position,
try turning off the ignition when the wipers are vertical, and try to turn off wipers in the park position, .. What happens when you switch on the ignition after either event?

This might help to diagnose the problem.

I've never had this problem before but it may help.

I'll be off line for a while so when I get back I will check the post, others may be able to chip in.

This is where repair by modular replacement works if you have enough spare parts.
But also check connections, they may have been corroded, and the extra load could make them open circuit.

Thanks Rustic... I will go out and try it in a while.... I will have to buy new parts so the 'modular' method is fine but not so when I gotta go buy them Would be good to actually pin it down to one part

Well.... I have done the following but still not sure of the fault???

Firstly tried the 'flick' wipe but it just stops as soon as you let the lever go... Secondly I tried the wash/wipe which washes and wipes but does not stop wiping!!!!...thirdly tried the normal wipe (delay just works like a normal wipe) and turned off ignition with blades half way up the screen then back on... just stayed there :nenau:nenau:nenau.. speedas all seem ok (slow and fast wipe) just doesnt either stop or return to the bottom of the screen.... Also if you turn off the ignition with wipers on when they are at the bottom of the screen they stay put when you switch back on..... I am thinking possibly the motor unit??? as there is obviously power going to the motor ? Or does anyone have a better idea?

Sounds like the switch inside the motor, it is on and part of the large gear, you will see the wires on the outside of the gear case, Rick

A flick to get the wipers going would be enough to allow the switch in the wiper motor to continue the cycle, so if the wipers stop part way while the ignition is on then either it is the switch in the wiper or the connection of the live feed to the wiper at the motor.
Either way it's look at the wiper motor, but try the connections first.
The live feed on the TD model is violet ( purple) according to my French 2.7TD manual. yours may be the same..

Does anyone know where the wiper relay uniy is for the front wipers? I am still having problems and although I think it is the motor I am not sure.... now if you use the delay, slow or high speed setting the wipers do not switch off until I stop the truck and turn it off... OR.... sometimes it will do 2.5 wipes for the wash/wipe setting and then park in the middle of the screen?. Think I am faced with the prospect of changing a bit at a time until its fixed

Looks like a possible £100 bill if I do all 3 :doh:doh:doh:doh

Thanks for the offer 11Redrex but have already ordered a motor off fleabay which should be here by the weekend? It is a post feb02 truck but looks like the standard bosch unit.... will try that first and if not I guess the next step will be the switch on the column???

ongoing saga.....

OK so this morning I have tried the new (2nd hand) wiper motor and no difference So.... what do I change next??? I cannot find a column swith on e bay so think it may be a main dealer expense .. also I am led to beloeve there is a relay in there somewhere but cannot see it in the wiring diagram !!! I am a bit lost for direction now... any ideas ??:nenau

It's Fixed !!!!!

Finally found the problem with the wipers !!!! so bloody simple I feel a bit silly tbh :nenau.... After putting up with the issue for a few weeks and bought a 2nd hand wiper motor and switch (which didnt do it.. so I now have spares!!) I decided it was the wiring, had to be.... soooooo..... printed off the electrical bit of the manual (all 294 pages of it ) and spent a while 'contemplating' said volume and this morning spent time under the bonnet/dash with diagram and multimeter... once I had worked out what should be on each wire at the wiper motor when switched on etc I finally found the earth is missing on terminal 6 of the plug ... comes from an earth point in the drivers side cab area.. found that and all looks fine so finally made a new connection under the bonnet and for now I have used a scotch lok to connect it up and all works fine :clap:clap:clap. I have some time off at the end of the month to rewire the towbar for my caravan so will do a proper job then..

am luvin my truck again
