Winter Tyres

Thinking about winter tyres for the Skoda now that we are down to one Terrano. Does anyone know if it is safe to run with winter tyres on the front driven wheels and standard on the rear or should all four be either standard or winter?

I ran my old Mkii Escort with snow tyres on the rear (with 50l water in the boot too) without problems.
My diesel Peugeot ran with winters on the front only, again with no problems. I don't see why their would be as the rears are effectively being dragged. I regularly had 6" of snow and steep hills to contend with.
I would never think of putting on the rears of a front wheel drive.

Using winter tyres for years (in winter) here in Belgium - I would not go without them, on all 4 wheels.

Not only for the occasional snow, mainly for driving in the rain here
I would not skimp on them - but then again we do over 40k km every year with our normal car, quite a lot of it in Germany (where winter tyres are a legal obligation on all wheels).

Here's my two-penneth worth...

I recently did some work for a very nice couple in the next village. Turns out he was marketing manager for Continental Tyres for donkey's years.

He fit's winter tyres to ALL his cars as soon as he gets them. He says that they work better all year round and give nearly twice as much mileage. He says that the British weather never gets hot enough to degrade the winter tyres during the summer, but work equally as well in the summer. They have a BMW 3.0D Coupe, Seat Leon Cupra and an Audi R8, all on winter tyres.

Here endeth my two-penneth worth.

I can believe that. I've run two sets of wheels on my Volvo V70 for years now but left the winter wheels on from autumn 2014 to spring this year. The winter tyres performed flawlessly through all seasons and run quieter than the summer ones. Wear was certainly no worse over summer on the winter tyres. When I took the summer wheels off this year I knew that if I run that set of wheels again I'll need to replace all four tyres. Since I'm not doing the miles that I used to in the V70 due to running the T2 it's unlikely that I'll actually buy another set of summer tyres for the V70.

My daughter is running a ten year old, low milage Fiesta on it's original tyres, it belonged to her grandparents. She needs to depend on the car for visiting placements on medical practice and having considered all options I'm going to put a set of 4 season tyres on it for her when needed.

Sure I have read somewhere that tyres should be replaced every 8-10 years regardless of tread depth. Could be wrong but worth mentioning as its your daughters car.

Vredestein All season tyres

For the UK I would fit some of the new all season type tyres like those made by Vredestein. I had standard Vredestein tyres on my Mini Cooper and they were brilliant they do well in tyre reviews particularly on the blind tests.

they the experts suggest replaceing on caravans if its standing most of the year but cars no as long as they are good with no cracking between treads and side walls
if van or motor home is well used replace when needed to be legal.

Replacing Tyres due to age.

Sure I have read somewhere that tyres should be replaced every 8-10 years regardless of tread depth. Could be wrong but worth mentioning as its your daughters car.

I replaced the tyres on my 300CRD due to cracking in the tread block gaps and sidewalls, no tread exposed so not an MoT fail.

I replaced them on advice from Technician at work. Vehicle had only done 12 k miles from new but they were 5 years old - Dunlops.

The Continentals on our Merc are now 11 years old with no visible cracking.

Last MOT had avisories on two tyres for a small amount of deterioration, hence the plan to replace the lot :thumb2
