Ongoing Black Pearl regeneration had one remaining big panel to fix. The o/s wing. It's been off for ages as other welding work was happening and I needed to sort the wiring on GP solenoid.
Many people will be experiencing rust under the plastic trim. Usually only apparent when the paint starts bubbling just beyond the plastic :doh
This little tip shot will help those without welding skills.
I'm rubbish with skinny wings at the best of times, let alone when the tin worms been nibbling :augie
The trimming part of this job is to do with extra room for big tyres and more suspension flex. I'd cut back the wings by eye ages ago and now doing all these jobs properly here's how to match one side to the other.
Here's my scabby wing, and then masked off ready to work out a simple grid on it.
Just measure off one side in 50mm increments and repeat on the wing to copy from
Then measure each point and mark. Draw a line through the points and fair off to get the nice curve. This should correct any little errors and be pleasing to the eye.
Then trim off all the bits beyond the line and tidy up with a file of grinder.Cleaned up and nearly ready for fibre glass :sly
Fibre glassing IS dead easy and strong.Cheap to do and kits avilable on fleabay . If you can dab a paint brush you can glass :thumbs
I've cleaned up the metal and got rid of all the rust. Cut strips of glass matt roughly to size. Apply a layer of resin on the wing , then lay on strips of glass and dab in. The resin will eventually soak through making the glass matt transparent. Keep adding extra layers, about 3 is good . Adding extra resin as you go to keep all the glass matt transparent.
In my case most of the rot has gone anyway but the old plastic trim holes etc are now glassed in and ready for filler.
All hard in half an hour and ready for underseal.
And the best bit, spraying on the underseal. You can use brush on but this stuff gets in all the knooks and crannies a treat
Bloomin' lovely :naughty
I'll get the other side sorted and update soon
