windscreen replacement

A cautionary tale, i've just had the windscreen replaced on my T2, rang round for some quotes, as i didn't fancy having a go myself. Rang Autoglass first (biggest ad in yellow pages) they quoted me £420!!! for someone to come out and fit it, or offered me a £10 discount if i drove the 50 miles round trip to the fitting station. They tried telling me that if i didn't have it fitted by them, it wouldn't be the right glass, it would devalue the car, it wouldn't be safe, my house would burn down etc etc. I'm sorry if anyone here works, or knows someone that works, for them, this isn't a comment on them personally, i'm sure they do a grand job, and their work is of a top quality, but where do they get the price from. I eventually got it fitted for £158 on my drive. And before anyone asks no it wasn't covered on my insurance, but it will be next time!!

£420 well they've got to cover their constant tv campaign costs.

National firms have their use, like when you're on hol way from home and
more easily claim on the warranty later if needed. But at home I like to
support local businesses. local firms for local people and all that...

I had it fitted by Nationwide Windscreens(York) ltd. they're based in Market Weighton, but cover most of North Yorkshire and Humberside, the fitter was telling me that Autoglass spend more on advertising in a year than their annual turnover.

well could be said if you have a good product it sells itself, by recommendation etc.
funny how some of these 'tv' firms have to offer certain standards of service by
definition of ads yet frankly been done over by several in virgo, staybrite (windows)
and previously coldseal (radio ads) before they folded.

Auto windscreens did mine last month, cost £50 on insurance and does not affect my no claims bonus so was well happy. Although there is a bloke in the burton on trent area that quoted me £110 to fit a new one and he is mobile.
