right i have been playing around with the pc to see what i can get out of the windows experiance

applying ram on a 1:1 scale has increased it by about .4 but the biggest hold back i have is the hdd but this is a new one with 7200 rpm and 3gps transfer speed

my current score is
7.1 cpu
7.1 ram
7.4 aero
7.4 games
5.9 hdd

any ideas on the hdd being so slow given that it is a sata2 and 500gb with nothing other than the os on it and no partitions

You are ultimately suffering from a combination of head movement & the max sustainable speed from the disk themselves & (7200 X Areal Density) and not the interface speed.

The simplest way to dramatically improve HDD i/o rates is to create a small multiple disk array with SATA HDD's, even just two drives in an array will have a significant effect. Or look at using 15K RPM SAS enterprise class drive... Going faster is easy, it just costs more..

so basically just raid 2hdd or get a 15k unit cheers

i thought 3gb/ps would have at least given me a 6 :sly:doh

Muhahaha! Now I remember why I retired from the desperately dreary world of IT!:augie
