Windows 7 boot manager missing ?

The wifes PC has just gone on the blink and it will not boot up. If I go into safe mode and try to use the system restore it works but will not boot up again if I switch it off. I have tried the various repair options with no joy.

I keep on getting a message that the boot manager is missing ?

Anyone got any ideas how to fix it without starting from scratch. Its running 32 bit in win 7 proffesional.

Ive used this way before and worked fine but you need a windows 7 disk to do it

have you got the original backup disc? if so put it in as thats the boot disc it is looking for

Try removing all plugged in USBs apart from mouse and keyboard. Windows 7 can try and boot from usb and it did it to me and would start in safe mode. So if you are charging your phone etc from USB it may be trying to boot from there.

The main reason people do not want to restart their puter is the loss of data.

On Vista even if you restart from factory settings there is a file called windows old that will hold all the files from the previous windows install. this (from memory is held on the C; drive in the windows file) - PLEASE CHECK FIRST B4 you wipe the puter in case i am wrong.

A second option is to download a programme called KNOPPIX which is a LINUX operating system and will by pass all passwords. Although i have not used it on windows 7 there are a few options that use LINUX such as red hat and UBUNTU. For UBUNTU create an ISO image on a disc and chose The 'Run it with Windows' option, because it doesn't change anything about your current Windows installation; all it does is add Ubuntu as a new application.

Once on a CD use boot from CD option on start up and the navigation on LINUX is similar to WINDOWS so it should not take to long to find your files.

Once found put on a USB stick or external hard drive in the normal way

the guide Spook has sent is what you need, you need to use a windows 7 startup disk, and first try the auto repair option, if that fails, use command prompt and bootrec commands to repait the boot up files.

Boot up issue

Thanks for your various suggestions.

Did a bit of all of them and managed to restore the system and back-up all the files including e-mails on external HD.

Started clean install this morning so far so good.
