Hi All
new boy here. when driving my terrano it starts to sound like its windig up then jumps outa gear then ok till i stop and start again .i assumed previous owner had used on tarmac in 4 wd.so we replaced gearbox transferbox with a second hand unit. and it still does it.so i removed front prop shaft.it was ok for 30 odd miles but has started to wind up but not jump outa gear.any ideas. is there a 2wd gearbox that will fit rather than risk buying another dodgy transferbox.
its a 96 2.7 d.

My fist thoughts would be lsd in back axel, have you changed the oil.. gets missed a lot in service, and also replaced with the wrong stuff..

but that is my first thoughts.

also hubs could be stuck, but as you removed the front shaft.. cant be them.

sound like its windig up

Can you describe the noise please.

Transmission windup doesn't give any noise however.

If its a clicking ratcheting noise then which ever side its coming from its probably the opposite side free wheeling hub locked on. Would happen with or without the front prop on. The turning action of the locked hub turns the front transmission and tries to lock in the other side, only because of the action of the differential things are turning in opposite directions so it can't - thus the clicking ratcheting noise. Its easy and best of all free to take the FW hubs off to see if somethings amiss so start there.

if your auto hubs were jammed on make sure you check the front diff oil asap

overheating or preasuring system could be worn out water pump or loose worn belt

my red one overheated dragging the pathfinder home on a trailer. pressured the system and blew a pipe...... drove it 6 miles with no water at all (slowly) but still towing. no problems

so head gaskets are strong on these. but its possible one you eliminate everything else

did'nt someone have similar pressure problems, try your rad cap first, it can cause water to expand to bottle, and not return when cooled down, and then you have an air lock. which will cause overheating.:doh

gonna try thermostat tomorrow then rad cap then i suppose water pump.my thinking originaly was pump not pumping enough so pressure builds up.dont you hate it when sometimes you may be right.
