Depending on how many amps the winch will draw you could poss use 8-4AWG car amp cable which is nice & flexy so easily routed

Dare I ask how the hell does wire gauge sizeing work ? It's all back to front to me ? Can't you just say what diameter it is, like M10 or 12 etc :nenau

I get a bit lost off with the wiring sizes to at times but the lower the number the thicker the wire & more amps it'll handle 0AWG is thick stuff prob as thick as your thumb, 6-8AWG is about as thick as the power cables off a car battery & 16-18AWG is like speaker wire. The longer the cable run the thicker it needs to be to handle the amps & to stop the cable from over heating

This might help Pete car audio based but the amps, cable length & cable thickness should be about the same I would think for a winch

metric is easier , that's in Millimeters squared ,
the bigger the number the bigger the cable

Good answer, I can understand that . Why does Ye Olde English system give us bigger numbers for smaller things ? Oh wait that's Govt

oops, sorry, well it's still backwards and didn't the Yanks "miss" Mars due to a Yankee / Imperial conversion error :lol

we used to use swg (standard wire gauge) british
but metric i find easier
you got to bear in mind you`ve still got to connect the cable to the equipment your going to fit,
i use a hydraulic crimp set and heatshrink for the lugs, but it can get very tight on the terminals

I've got a big mechanical ratchet crimper and then solder the end result . Water proof heat shrink stuff galore too :thumbs
Front winch on the Black Pearl and on the Trol are fine after loads of dunkings :thumb2

just my bit, I run my 12 volt fridge on 50 sq mm cable, yes 50 (about as thick as many ladies little finger) but the batteries are 25 mtrs away, so = 50 mtrs in all, it is all to do with volt drop, with this cable I get negligible volt drop so fridge is happy, Rick

if you look at the cable calculations the size required can be worked out by the ,

length of cable, volts drop per metre (resistance = heat)

ambient temperature, the hotter it is the less it will carry

if the cables are run in between thermal insulation, how its supported and if they are grouped together, (temperature)

these are all assuming that they carry a constant load for long periods of time
(temperature again)

where as a winch will start with a high current flow , then drop and it only operates for short periods
