Winch looks good bud though that's not a shackle, looks like a strap/sling for using to recover another vehicle or put round a tree to protect it if your using it as a point to winch from :thumb2

Those three are your shackles, they'll have a load rating stamped on them :thumb2

Definate noobage going on here

Thanks for the update, I thought the tree strap was called shackle :lol

I've just bought some heavy duty gloves (with leather inner lining) a huge armoured cricket bag to put the winch in and the hugest can of wd40 :augie

Do I need anything else?

I also don't understand how the shackle clips onto the cable yet

No problem bud, we all had to learn it :)

The pins unscrew from the shackles which, I think, should let you attach one to the fitting on the end of your winch cable :thumb2

Ok, having used these for years in forestry, can I make a few suggestions regarding use, safety, and some useful hints........?

I think you may be missing a shouldered pin, with a drilled hole to take a locking pin, that should fit the `taluritted` eye at the end of the cable. You can then use this end to fit another `D` shackle to your vehicle.
The strop should be wrapped around a tree, in fact if you double it, bring the eyes together, then put your shackle through the eyes, you will have increased the SWL on this strop.
You need to find your local wire rope agent, and get them to make up an endless wire rope loop, Talurit spliced, that exceeds the maximum load of the winch. In fact, I would get them to remove that eye thingy, and put a proper Tirfor rated hook eye on it......a much more useful fixing...
This should be placed in the jaws of the winch into which you push through the main anchor pin. The reason for this is, that when the winch is under load, there is a risk that the winch could twist. If you have a shackle in this jaw, there is a very real risk that the winch will be force twisted/ leveraged apart. With this flexible link in the system, you avoid this.
Buy a snatch/pulley block (3_4 tonne), you can attach this to the vehicle with a shackle, pass the rope from the winch through the block, and hook back on the tree shackle. This increases the pull of the winch by x2 I believe.
Always have more than one long strop, rated at 4ton + they are invaluable, they can give you the possibility for an offset pull if direct line is not possible.
I`m sure there's more.......

Sorry, can someone a whole lot more familiar with it, please create the thread, and I will do my best to help......although I have no wish to sound clever or teach my granny to suck eggs.......

I think in the wrong hands, without suitable training this equipment could become a liability.
There is so much that has to be set correctly prior to use.:augie

Before you use it, please, please...get some advice on how to set it up, and be in a position to do your own risk assessment, more especially if used with other members of the public, of your family around you.

I'm sorry but the phrase " All the gear, and no idea" springs to mind :doh

Sorry to be so harsh, but better safe than sorry.:thumb2
