Winch cable binding

Wound out my winch today, go the missus to sit in the cab with the remote whilst I pulled out the cable, whilst checking the cable and keeping tension I managed to cut myself on one loose strand of cable much further in :doh

Bloody sharp stuff...

It did unravel once, guess that will help, I will try again later :thumb2

You will sometimes need to unwind under load too if you've really got it in a bunch.

Perhaps where I went wrong, I only ever let the cable out whilst keeping it tight, perhaps I twisted it at some point :doh

You should be able to pull the cable out by hand with the clutch disengaged on a well maintained winch.
Only time I have never been able to do that is when mine had frozen up.
Good pair of gloves is essential for steel rope.:thumb2

I do have the gloves, but buried in the boot somewhere :augie

I always leave it in gear and use the remote to unwind it bad practise perhaps

Also Rick made the front grill detachable for me, but I never rmove it, just use the remote :augie

Yeah it does once you take the tension off.
Just how I have been told to leave it.:nenau
Mine is under a cover so out of sight.

Hmm interesting, I wonder if they are supposed to be left loose or under pressure then? :nenau

To unspool it's best to release the clutch, quicker but can be a pain with steel rope if it has not been spooled on properly.

I've never left the clutch disengaged when not using it.

It's probably better to leave it under pressure a tad, Not too much though.

Alex will loose a finger at this rate :doh

I lied my clutch is still engaged.
Took my cover off at work today to have a look at my cable while peeps are talking about it and it's fresh in my mind.
All nice and neatly spooled and all but the first 8" or so is nice and clean :thumb2

nothing wrong with it Alex it is as I say brand spanking, took it to off road meets with a £20 ticket on it no interest at all, reduced it to £15 still nothing no one wants steet thats it, so if it will get you out of trouble its yours, or anyone elses, but collection only I really cannot be having the hassel of wrapping and posting Rick
