Winch bumper

Ok so my bumper is smashed now, so I've started making my winch bumper

Templates these first, will get them cut from plate, I'm thinking 9mm but would 6mm be ok ... ?

9mm would be good for the centre mounting part. That should do even for a 12000lb winch
Prob too thick for the outer parts though, unless you want it massively heavy

I'm also thinking of attaching the winch tray to the sides with 6mm angle and bolts

Much stronger than my arc welding methinks

Then I'll just use my mig to make the corner parts up

Kind of hard to describe, but if you make the centre winch tray and plates that are going to attach it to chassis from the 9 mil then make the side/end pieces from 4 or 5mil, you will have plenty of strength without having to wind your torsion bars up too much to take the added weight of winch and bumper.

I've made a couple of winch bumpers for discos and I used 8mm for the centre tray/chassis mounts and 4mm for the sides, but semi boxed in the sides at the rear to add strength by design rather than weight if you understand me.

They were using 8000/9000 lb winches which is plenty for the size of vehicle.

I made one first then had it mass produced.
6mm is more than enough :thumbs
As long as the weld is good and penetrated then no issues with welding or folding. However if you can design as much of the main winch tray to be folded then all the better Then weld those side templates to it. Simples.

My main part of winch bumper is made of 8mm plate including brackets which are bolted and welded to original brackets for piece of mind. I also have a couple of other brackets welded to chasismy bash plate is 6mm and its had abuse and stood strong. if i knew how to put a pic on here id show it to you but there only on my phone and tbh i havent a clue

9mm would be too heavy 5 or6 mm would be fine

Are you planning to use the points on the chassis where the tow hook is bolted as well as the bumper mounting points and if not why?
There are two 12mm fine captive nut each side. Ideal I would have thought for winching.

Just the 2 bumper mount bolts as I'm sure that's what many others have used ... ?

Just re-read my post, sorry if it sounded a bit abrupt

I just wondered because the mounting brackets don't look very substantial to me, they are only designed for a plastic bumper with a bit of steel bracing.
I do remember somebody posted pictures showing some work to reinforce the brackets but I can't recall why they were doing it.

I've been thinking about a winch/bumper myself and decided, if I do it, that I would use a 4 point mount with the bumper brackets and the "tow hook" points, most of the work on the latter.

Ive found mounting brackets for bumper are fine, ive basically hung my truck off a tree with winch and its not even budged or bent them.

each to there own at the end of the day but if you like pay and play days some insist on front recovery points

I've done 3 now and driven them all hard :sly into trees, rocks and the ground. Winched mine all over the place no issues. 4 bolts into the chassis where the bumper bkts once were, simples
The holes under the chassis I used as a bolt on position for my bash plate. That's then bolted to the bumper, so it is triangulated too
