Don't think they are, I sold some auto hubs to someone on here for a 2001 or 2002 and they were not a straight bolt on job if I recall correctly.

Hi all

Will these be a straight fit into my 2004 2.7tdi?

Also is it as simple as unbolting the end off and bolting these on?

Cheers
Glen.

Ex mod, remapped, terracleaned, new maf, new leak off pipes, k&n filter, one very nice terrano!!

I would also like to know the answer to this as I might do the same to my 2004 however, I know this has been raised so many times before but can someone please tell me the difference between manual and auto hubs as it confuses me :doh

auto hubs self lock when put into 4wd, manual hubs you have to get out and lock them yourself

Mine must be auto on the 04 as well then as I haven't had to get out and lock them when I engaged 4WD the other day

oh and then you have fixed hubs which are locked all the time

Normally easy to spot manual ones as they have a bit in the middle you turn 90deg to lock them. Auto and fixed are harder, but auto tend to be bigger for the mechanics to fit in.

sent from my phone, sorry for any typo's.

Yours will be fixed.

To be honest if you don't drive big distances you won't notice any extra economy. I'd prefer fixed hubs for reliability.

Will bolt staight on just make sure they are selling the complete hub with the brake rings.Only mod you need to do is unscrew the studs and replace them with the bolts supplied

Cheers cncfabs. Exactly what I thought. And surely it's got to be better not having to turn the whole front axle than running fixed hubs. Even if only driving round town. I'm giving it a go anyway and will report back. I'll take plenty of pics when I'm doing it and post on here
Thanks all
Glen.

I'm sure you have to change the front hubs or the drive shafts are different lengths going off what people have said who have converted from auto to fixed hubs:rolleyes: TBH don't see the point going this route as it's just something else to go wrong & at low temps manual hubs can freeze in position:doh TBH never noticed any MPG difference as i've had both setups & can still get 32 MPG on a run easily:augie

Agree with Sweety about the MPG my 05 plate is more economical than my 96. I replaced my autos on my older truck with manuals and never had mine freeze. Check the workshop manual and check to see if it shows you all the extra washers, spacers and circlips than the fixed hubs. I suspect Sweety will be right about the drive shafts too. Have to say tho my older truck has more go about it than the newer one and when I unlock the front hubs on the old one I can tell a big difference too.
Personally I'd leave well alone.

They bolt straight on ive done it and the driveshafts are all the same

Also its not just about mpg its all the other wear and tear you have with fixed hubs

If anyone knows about the drive shafts you will:thumb2

Very true about the wear and tear, the lack of grease nipples on the later fixed hub drive train.

Well I've ordered them and can't wait to get them on. The difference between fixed and auto in my opinion is big. And cncfabs is correct about not just mpg. It's a whole host of things that basically I want. My car is a road car and always will be. Maybe need 4 wheel drive on a grass field one day when towing my caravan. Better mpg. Better acceleration. Less wear and tear. What's not to like about that.

Keep us updated bud as I've been wanting to do this as I do a fair bit if road but love green laning and I don't like the idea of prop etc turning when not needed as mine sound noisier than my mates and can only put it down to mine turning a lot more gear than my mates older one. So will be waiting inpatiantly to see how you get on

Will do mate. Hopefully have them on by the weekend.

As a side note auto or manual hubs won't fit behind the 17" alloy's a lot of the later T2's came with:thumbs
