Cheers Deano - some very good points there.

I work in the car service industry, but at the customer facing end, but engineering background, so spanners hold no fear for me. Repairs that are beyond my confidence can be entrusted to the technicians (as they are now called) where I work. Having said that, I'm much happier when I have a roll of duct tape and a hammer to repair my cars :) Oh yes, I've owned Landrovers before.....

The internet is full of car forums, and all of them have horror stories to tell about particular derivatives of car, having particular problems. I shudder at work when a customer says he's seen on the internet that 'it's a common problem'. That doesn't make the customer wrong tho.....

Manufacturers definitely rely on making money back from parts, as parts that aren't often changed, cost the earth, however its the dealer trying to maximise service costs for the customer, cos thats where the profit is. We don't want breakdowns, we want services, with extras such as brakes and tyres. Thats the gravy.

Back to the point though, I really appreciate the helpful replies from everyone on here, and I do consider every opinion given. My problem is I am impatient. I want it NOW! Or possibly sooner.

3 grand and a V70 to sell are burning a hole in my pocket.... I'll probably change my mind once or twice more before I buy something :)

So, all you helpful people, please don't think I am ungrateful, I appreciate all the help, and information, and hope to contribute more to the forum as I get to know whichever Terrano I buy....

I am glad i bought my 2.7tdi.This is my 1st terry. And after doing research and chatting with some mates and a family member in the know.I was informed the this engine is almost bullet proof.
But as with any motor, you can get a wrong un.But like you have said. With money in pocket (Burning a hole in ya pocket)and a motor to sell.Dont be rash.It is a buyers market at the moment.
I am on the look out for a second motor(Undecided as yet)

My 05 is much cleaner than my old 01 underneath, as for 2.7 v 3.0, had both and prefer the 3.0.
I didn't have issues with my 2.7 engine, but there are plenty of people on here who have and are suffering issues with them.

Timing gears and chains are much better than rubber belts

It's up to you what you buy, I know what I would go for

Why don't you take a test drive in one of each and get a feel for each engine? Any respectable dealer should let you out in a vehicle for 20mins.

It seems there are dedicated 2.7 people and 3.0 people. I'm driven towards the 3 because of the V70 power I have now. Although I've had slow landrovers before too, so could cope with a 2.7, as they would seem quick in comparison :)

There's a plan, right there :)

and then pops up choice number 5.... :)

Like I said, I had a 2.7 for 7 years and liked it a lot, had no major problems with it, although it was getting bad underneath with rust.
I like the Terrano as a tow vehicle and general car.I just liked the idea of better MPG and more grunt with my van in tow, oh, and did I mention how easy it is to change the oil filter :augie

asking 2750, but now he has someone going to look before I get there :(

ive got an 0'3 2.7, bought it on 72k miles, one previous owner and a huge wad of service history, it seems a good truck, tows well, and apart from the cv gators i can say its been no trouble at all. no rust issues whatso ever or i wouldnt have bought it. £2750 seems a good price if its a good car, dont be scared to lift carpets and mats and have a good feel, as i reckon leaky cars not being fixed is possibly more to blame than the metal used(french or not). the air con is important with all the glass space, i use mine most days when the sun is out, so about 3 times a month lol! theres cheaper cars out there, i know, i looked at them, the 6th and 7th seats really are just impractical to use daily, just for emegencies i would imagine? good luck with your search!
