As a follow up question from my confused state yesterday:

I notice this knocking noise that occurs at idle has been reported a few times but can't seem to find the exact cure on here?

The noise isnt always there and goes away when revved anyway but most seem to point towards clutch area and if so would a new clutch kit cure it and are they hard to fit (only ever done one clutch and it was in a landrover 90 and had to take the engine out).

Should I just leave it for now but Im worried as we are going France probably this year and I'd hate it to go bang on a 2K driving trip?

Im up for having a go at most things, I hate the cost that garages charge for labour hence prefer the money to stay in my bank account. If it is a fix at home job Id be happy to do it and document the process for the site.

no telling if it will cure your noise, but I would have said it would be the gearbox layshaft making it any way, does it go when you press the clutch pedal? if so then most likely box, do not worry about it, if it is the clutch then I favor engine out unless you have access to hoist etc, had loads of engines out easy, but only one box, nightmare, Rick

Well, as usual, Rick is spot on with the diagnosis, you need to see if it's the lay shaft, as the gearbox would need to come out anyway.
The layshaft is a known problem, and is said to be caused by a lack of lubrication on the 2.7td, some members have added a little more oil to the gearbox to slow this process down.
Also some members have added some molyslip to reduce any further wear, and has been known to quieten down the box. (Do a search Molyslip).
Others have dropped the gearbox, but the torsion bars have to be removed and the cross beam, and you need a lot of clearance under the vehicle and some form of lifting equipment.

well thanks for the advise - Im off out to get some molyslip and extra gearbox oil then its going in later - can't do any harm.

i get the same noise on my 98,ant worried as it wont go bang.most time on tickover sometimes not there, push clutch in and its gone.

well been and got 5L of gearbox oil and some molyslip - damn thats stuffs expensive for what it is!!!!!!!!!
Thought I'd get enough oil to change the gearbox oil completely - I have read you fill from the gearstick is that right?

Hope you didn't get GL5, it will kill the gearbox bronze fittings, these MUST have GL4 grade gearbox oil

I think you need to slow down, make a list if your woes and video ir audio record what you can, then let us take a look, most faults have occurred on here before :thumb2

Including a shredded clutch, slipping clutch ect ect :thumb2

If it rattles away with the clutch up & then go's quiet when you press the clutch down it's most likely the lay shaft in the box had this on my last T2 & I added an extra bit of oil into the box but that was it & even tho it still rattled after 40K it never got any worse but second gear was just starting to get a little stiffer to select. If this ones G/box starts to rattle I won't be doing a thing about it i'll just run it till it does give up then either a new box will go in or mine will get a rebuild

Oops shredded - that sounds fun lol.

I can never do anything by halves - all or nothing:confused:

Ill check the grade of oil I got before I use it - can always exchange it for another as they are great down my local car parts place.

has anybody else filled theres by removing the gear stick?

And whilst Im at it is the transfer box a diferent oil -sorry if its a dumb question.

ours only started to rattle after clutch was changed

to be honest if sitting idling have clutch depressed anyway to lessen the load on it.

Filler/level plug is on the side of the gearbox.

be careful molyslip is a friction inhibitor based on molybdenum disulfide, but you need friction for your syncro rings to work to synchronize your gears between changes, layshaft rattle is not a problem worth worrying about, I have had many T2's most have had rattle one also had a whine all did regular heavy towing, none gave any problem, do not worry about it, Rick

Cheers Rick its always a relief to listen to those that have experience of these things, I will sleep easier tonight thats for sure as this morning my mind was full of bad end scenarios for my gearbox lol:thumb2
