wierd smell

guys im new to the forum
Iv just purchased a 53 plate terrano 2.7tdi the truck has done 47000 miles
The problem im getting is a smell of gear oil or simular coming into the car when warm, seems to get stronger with windows open!
no obvious leaks anywhere .can any one shed any light? its driving me barmy

I get a similar smell, may be not as strong as you mention. There are two gear lever gaters for the main gear stick, the nice letherette plastic thing and under neath there is a rubber one that splits. I've heard of people being able to super glue the edges of the rubber gater together. Have a look in the downloads section and open the workshop on the subject of adjusting the handbrake and rear brakes. It explains how to remove the centre console to allow access for changing. If I remember right you can also carefully pull the visible gear lever boot out to look inside instead of removing the centre console but I don't think this gives enough access to do a great deal with rubber boot.

You'll find that the rubber booty on the 4x4 shift had perished with the heat from the exhaust pipe that passes by it.
remove brake / center console, about 6 screws some hidden in the ash tray, lift up carefully and you'll see the booty.

When I replaced my booty I took some kitchen foil placed over the hole and then put the booty on. This helps reflects the heat from the exhaust. :wink:

My god i just emptied the gear box oil THE SMELL!
refilled will give it a try today , changed engine oil too..

ive just changed my engine oil with 20w/50 amazing how quite it is now!!

Replace all the run off hosing first, some are less visible than others under the intercooler but they still perish.

Iv replaced the lot jopnathan apart from the pipe that runs to the fuel pump
