just for fun,why/what made you get a 4x4.
my reason was out with the caravan i got mud stuck 3 times in 1 season so decided to get one.

Mine too originally was the caravan but sadly only had the van for about a year after we got it. I chose a Terrano because I used to work at Nissan Dealerships and the seven seater because of the family.

always wanted one. went to Langdale experience one time many years ago and that solidified it for me. Finally got to afford a Fourtrak and loved it. Love having the rugged vehicle to hand.

My 1st terrano used to belong to my grandad before he passed away, i bought it because my gran wouldn't take any money to help towards the funeral costs, then the modding bug took hold :lol:lol:lol

i got my first one from a fellow vanner as he was going newer to a kia.he had it 8 years.
i got it at a good price but had a few probs to sort out.
i ran a bonfire meet this year and it peed down and i used my t2 to tow car owner vans of off the field to save churning up field.

4 x 4 reasons

For me it was getting stuck at Mapperly reservoir near Ilkeston when I went Pike Fishing in January 2004. Had a Merc C250 TDi estate and had to be towed out by a Rexton 4 x 4 of all things.

Had no mobile phone in those days just struck lucky with a bloke trying his motor in the snow & ice I guess. I always carry a tow rope so he was happy to pull me nearly half a mile into the village of Mapperly.

Searched the web and found a Merc 300 TE 4-matic in Bolton for £1000 with 4 months tax on it and that was the start of my 4x4 owneship. After the Merc I had the r3mR Terrano now its the Santa Fe. We run it as a third car between the two of us but to be honest i'ts the transport of choice for trips to France, to Chester to see our Daughter and for everyday use.
We do about 8k miles a year in the 4x4 and I do about 4-5k in the 300 C estate. The SL Cabriolet is for Sunday dry day outings and in recent years only does about 600 miles a year mostly hood down!

When we shrink back to a more sensible two car family we will get a newer 4x4 and loose the 300C.

Had 4x4`s for a long time, cos I worked for 35+ years, and still do on the land and in the forest.
Started with an old S1, a few S2`s, S2a`s, a few Defenders, Fourtrack, Disco, and now the T2, all work horses, this one and the old Disco, family cars after a scrub up......:thumb2

I did a Range Rover driving experience thing many years ago and was sold on the versatility of a 4x4. Before that I'd been a motocross fan and the mags of the day were full of 4x4 pick ups carrying bikes.
I bought a Lada and loved it, I was living at 900m and needed something to ensure I could move when it snowed.
When I got back to the UK I started looking at either a Hilux or Terrano and ended up with a Terrano for its engine, go anywhere ability and size. I'm looking to get away for some biking adventures and the Terrano should be perfect.

My first 4x4 was a Disco (company car. :D). I wanted the higher viewing position and the more upright seating. It was also the time Essex Police had started using the hand held speed cameras and I thought a big lump would make me drive slower (It did too :thumb2) The 4x4 just came with it. I soon realised this was useful in the snow - I could get to work when other couldn't. :doh

Next came a Terrano, wanted the 7 seats for the wife and kids on the school run. Unfortunately didn't do enough homework and bought a petrol one. Rather expensive to run, but didn't do too many miles each week. It spent the next 10 years in 2wd.

The company disco was replaced with a Patrol. A significant improvement. :clap I also discovered that it was not compulsory for the car to spend so much time in the garage getting things replaced. After 4 years with the disco I was on first name terms with everyone in the local LR dealership. :(

After the patrol I had to go back to a disco. The cost of running the Patrol exceeded the company guidelines. Back to renewing the friendships at the LR dealers. :(

Next was back to a Patrol. Change of management at work and the rules were relaxed. :clap. Unfortunately this only lasted 6 months before it was written off by some kids in a pocket rocket running into the front wing and bending the chassis.

As the tax situation on company cars was getting silly, I opted out and bought a Honda CR-V. This is surprisingly good in the snow, but useless on wet grass or mud. Very comfortable around town or on the motorway. I am now on my second.

All this time, the faithful Terrano was still getting the wife about, but now the kids had grown, it was an expensive way of getting her to work. I took this on as a weekend shooting wagon and she got a little VW polo.

Now the Terrano has gone to the great smelters in the sky, I have bought an old 52 plate Patrol and am in the process of modifying it as a true "go anywhere" car, the 4x4 bug is firmly here to stay.

Now let me cast my mind back... oh nearly 20 years.. Why did I buy my maverick?
Oh let me think...:augie

I was in the market for a 4x4, as we had a boat, and one day wanted to trail it.
Boat plus trailer around 2000kg.
I needed a 4x4 with low ratio, incase we got stuck on a slip way.
The options at the time were a discovery, Terrano, or Frontera.
Then we noticed the Maverick, I preferred the bland grey trim to the Terrano.
Boy did we make the right decision.:thumb2
We live at the top of a Hill, on the edge of Cannock Chase, so we see a fair amount of snow, nearly a foot last year, and the year before.

I learnt to drive, when I was 17, in a 1966 series IIA LR SWB 2 1/4 petrol.
In fact, it's still on the road somewhere when I did the MOT Road Tax search.

I prefer the higher driving position of the Mav, although company cars, I have had in the past, had a lot more power. Sierra 2.0 iS was terrible in the snow, an sri cavalier, that went well too.

now a twist,my most embarrassing mud stuck was when a fellow vanner towed me out with van with his landy .at the time i was using a zx 1900td that went well but not on wet grass towing.

I nearly got stuck in the early days, I drove onto some loose pebbles, duck stones, on the beach, they were like roller bearings, they were flying everywhere, so into 4wheel drive low ratio, and out she popped...:nenau
That could have been embarrassing lol..
Of course there was an audience...:augie

Another reason, previous year to buying the first t2 we had been on holiday in August with the caravan towed by our trusty 1.6 Primera which was a great car. Trouble was there was an incline out of the caravan site so with a soaking wet awning the caravan became just too much for the clutch. Wife decided she didnt like towing with the Primera anymore. First trip out with the Terrano towing the van got stopped by cars in front at the bottom of Sleights on the way into Whitby if anyone knows it. The Terrano just pulled away without a problem, fell in love with it from that moment on.

I was into series LR's before I got the 1st Terry, but the reason I got the Terrano, was to pull the caravan onto a very nice spot when we went to a site in Swanage, before we had Terry, the site owner had to be around to help site the van.
That site is now closed, but will keep a 4x4 while we still caravan, plus they are great when it snows :thumb2

I went car shopping & was looking at mits evo's & skylines but wife said no because I would get banned from driving:lol but them noticed my last Terrano & really liked it so started looking at other 4x4's but for some reason kept going back to look at it, 2 weeks later we walked in & bought the T2:thumbs alway modded my car & was going to put a set of 20"+ rims on it as that was the trend with street going 4x4's then but then joined here & that idea soon got scrapped:lol:lol:lol sadly we PX'ed it in for a disco2 biggest mistake i've ever mad:doh sold that after 20 months & went back to a performance car again but in the end we needed a bigger motor for our camping gear & we had started thinking of getting a caravan but I was having big problems getting out of cars so started looking at 4x4's again & but after looking at over 40 T2's we said we would look at 2 more then give up trying to find one that wasn't full off rot, dented/scraped, scruffy inside or with high mileage & found the one we have now:D

Growing up in farming I always fancied a 4x4 of some kind although we never really ran one ourselves for some reason (my Dad did have a Lancruiser 80 when I was younger though).

Had my heart set on a double cab Hilux for a long time but eventually realised I couldn't afford one (not unless it was a lot older and mega miles), then my 206 estate needed a whole new back axle for it's MOT which I found were like hen's teeth and not cheap. Decided to call it a day with the 206 and picked up a SWB 2.5 Shogun - I was well and truly bitten by the bug. When the timing belt went on the SWB :)doh) I bought a LWB 2.8 Shogun. Ran that for a year on the farm and at shoots and then decided to sell her while she was still running well and buy something newer.

Thought about getting a double cab but realised they weren't as comfortable as the older Shogun had been. Considered a newer Shogun but was put off by the all round independent suspension. Around the same time I read a group review of a Disco 3, Patrol, Shogun and Jeep Commander. Price bracket was higher and vehicle age was newer than I was looking at but the Patrol made an impression and was considered the best offroad vehicle out of the lot... rest is history!

Since then the modding and offroading bug has well and truly hit :lol

Got a 4x4 out of sheer necessity: I do really need 4x4 while participating in our shooting syndicate :)
Most of the area we shoot over is not accessible by car, either due to bad roads (or no roads...) or due to access for cars being blocked.

My T2 purchase was out of neccesity rather than for the 4x4 capability. We needed a 7 seater due to having 4 children and it had to be reasonably cheap to purchase.

I had sold my Toyota Corolla Verso which had been great whilst the engine lasted however had become more and more expensive to keep running due to parts and labour prices. I wanted a car that i could have a go at working on, that wasn't too complicated and was reasonable when it came to parts/servicing etc.

I had been looking at a ML500 or a ML270 however they seemed a little excessive with parts etc. A black Terrano Sport grabbed my attention whilst looking through the classifieds and it was close to home, i got the clearance from the Mrs and purchased said Terrano.

It has had a couple of problems and still has a couple that need to be sorted however i am chuffed with it and thats all that really counts. :thumbs

Initially wanted to be ready for a zombie apocalypse and have a good stance on the road as lots of idiots around.

Missus found our first 4x4 when I fancied something different from a highly kitted MR2, immediately got into off-roading and getting muddy, stupidly sold the frontera to buy a honda accord :doh 10 months later and £2200 in repair bills  I realised it did nothing fun, no pavements no potholes no mud, no lanes, we then looked at loads of different makes of 4x4 all put me off because of dmf or cam chain ect, then stumbled across terrano, was put off by the weird bumper look at first, then it grew on me, bought this one, then the mods began :sly

Scrapped those weird petruding bumpers too :D

Dunno about anyone else but I could never ever leave the 4x4 scene, space, comfort, fun, offroad ability :thumb2

And now I am ready for a zombie apocalypse :clap

all weather 7 seater.

all weather caravan tug.

probably the best non green oval off roader with legendary reliability.

raised seating position, view of the road, hazard perception bonus view,

first muddy caravan rally site was pulling a ford explorer and its caravan off the field.

sometimes wish was little wider for middle row passengers but then does aid parking.
