4 wd and sludgy snow = 4 wheel spin. Fab hehe - mind you I would only do this in a 'safe' environment - but its great fun. We've only had an inch or 2 but fingers crossed there will be more. But WHY O WHY does this country grind to a halt with a mere covering??? 25 miles today, instead of taking 25 mins, took nearly 2 hours!!! this is good - it has taken me much more in the past when we've had some of the white stuff!!!

I can remember in the late 80s and early 90s we used to get snow every winter, much deeper and for a longer period of time then we do now and it never caused as much bother then, this country is gettin soft lol

I used to do Vienna and back every week in the 70's with a 32 ton artic and never had any problems even at -18 the only time I stopped was after I got back to Dover, this country has never been any different, unprepared!!!!!!.. Rick

Snow

I Did !!! West of Swansea this morning on the A4 westwards towards Fishguard. A mini blizzard - came down witin minutes and covered the road and countryside.I was on my way to Ireland towing a trailer and had fun and games on the downhills.Few shunts along the way as well. Then when we were about 10 miles from the coast no more snow.Just rain.Just moved back to Ireland with my T2,towed like a dream and used less than half a tank from Chippenham to Wexford - pretty good.More later as duty calls.(My name for Mrs 4wheel)

now this is where lsd shows no worth what so ever lol

if you manage to loose control in the snow/icy conditions then lsd makes things worse, if you had open diffs then you would gain traction one side allowing the other to slip and slide, so instead of doing a 360 spin because both rear wheels are turnin at the same speed (think wet weather and corners) 1 side wont loose traction so easily and allow the motor to become more stable, but it means that they will get stuck more easily as only 2 wheels/1 wheel will turn deending on what typ of 4wd system you have

also i have been told that in snow which is fresh you are better off having wider tyres than thin ones but as it gets more compacted you are better to have thin ones :nenau

ah but what about mud and snow tyres which are supposed to be designed for the white stuff ???

Ballox :doh
Open diff starts spinnin' and stays spinnin' simples.

Well I dont think it makes any sense as did some of the instructors we had on 4x4 response either.
Open diff cars in the snow/ice will spin up on either wheel then stay spinnin'
LSD will a bit but you've got drive stiull. The trouble comes with lead foot driving and wrong gearing:rolleyes:

i am under the understanding that it only spins 1 wheel if their is traction one side and not the other

if all wheels have the same amount of traction then they all spin

i dont know i dont know much about it lol open diff, locking diff, lsd and the new traction control 4wd

i do know that on an open diff you can control the system with your brakes unsure if this would work with a lsd

I may get confused now with wine n that but both wheels will spin if it's loose loose or ice, but the point being there will be some drive if any grip available.
4x4 response didnt like the 2 japs on the course I did cause their patter didnt work cause it's all landie based. We pissed all over them and then wound them up some more cause we were only in 2wd :lol

You can use the brakes to help the front if it's spinnin' up far better thasn the back on a landie as the front brakes actually do something:D

i have noticed landy owners dont like jap 4x4's been told to get a 90 twice now lol

now with the brake thing i think i may have a disadvantage i have 3 sets of brakes 1 is hand brake and the others are disks

oh on a side note i have come across hundreds of lanes on mm loads in wales

Yeh but you'll still have 80 odd % bias up front so if the front is spinnin one side foot brake if the backs spinnin hang on the handbrake:thumbs

if your lossing control I think having a lsd would help aslong as you kept gearing right with help from the front brakes. Surely it's better for 2 wheels to add friction than one? Anyway I'd be running 4wd. Maybe the beers have made it simple?

snow

whoop whoop the snow finally cometh in stafford , I think ive got to go to the shops for something wink wink :naughty
