i bought a nissan consult unit to read my fault codes (i know u dot need it but i think my ecu is f**k) it came with a serial cable but my latop does not have a serial port so i bought for £3 a usb to serial cable with drivers to make a serial port but the guy i bought the consult from said u cant run it through a usb to serial cable so every1 who has 1 r the running it through a proper serial port as i think this is my problem as the laptop wont talk to the consult device.

Makeitfit has the same setup to you, he initially had issues with the USB/Serial adaptor. I don't know what he did to solve it though, but he did get it all working ok.

I guess you did not try the test I suggested, as I have just found out Vista ships without Hyperterm, if you still want to try that here a link to a free terminal prog you can use as previously suggested.

I've heard of lots of problems with USB to Serial connectors. Sorry can't help with a known working brand but you do have to shop about to get one that works.

With some experience trying to program radios with a usb-serial interfaces I can say only some chipsets will work. And one for £3 is unlikly to have one that does as it's made very cheap.

If you wish to continue trying to find one that works look for a ftdi or prolific chipset based converter.

makeitfit is borrowing my laptop which has a serial connector on it. I kept it as I am always using serial type hardware and I can't really rely too much on the converters.

I brought one from maplins for programming radios etc and that works on all my pc's.

Don't get too carried away - I believe you would be the first proven instance on the site of a bolloxd ECU if it was........:augie

Agreed, very robust units, the times we have flashed them on bangers and they still run OK, although these are the petrol models, but see no reason for the diesel to be any different, Rick

keep tuned to this thread the problem i have is when i first got the truck it ran fine with no mil light but every few days the idle would go lumpy when coming off the throttle and it got to just below 1000rpm so to make sure the mil light would record a fault i unpluged injector no.1 mil light came on and did the paper clip BUT when i tryed to read the codes as the download and in the manual the light stops flashing i have to keep the clip in all the time to get the codes out so i have not been able to reset the codes too:doh the injector no.1 cleared by it self so then i thought i unplug the coolant temp sensor for the ecu now after that the mil light is on all the time checked the codes and it came up with coolant temp sensor so i bought 1 only £8 fitted it and still on i cant clear codes and the engine is behaving like this every day say once every other throttle release i took out the ecu thinking it could be the 5 plugs no diff then while the ecu was out i traced the wires back from the engine coolant sensor to the ecu and did resistance check and both wires are fine showing no breakes in the wires so thinking could be ecu mucking around. dont get me wrong apart from the idle isuse the truck runs well i came back from the lakes with tin tent (i live in devon) and traveling at 60mph no problems some time if u hold the throttle still u feel i miss but that only happens 1 or 2 times every 100miles it was returning 19mpg towing the tin tent at 60mph does not go in to limp mode and it does it running on either diesel or svo so has any1 else had this problem

"Idle shudder or bounce" on returning to idle is common with this pump. It's caused by a slightly too high IQ value in the ecu maps. Often worse in hot weather or with a tunit box. It is not a fault.

You do seem to have a separate fault causing your LOS at 60mph, and it's probably the MAF beginning to go out of range if no fault code is set.

Yes a classic with a Tunit wound up too far....but oddly only seems a problem on the manual. I've just moved my Tunit over the the MkIII automatic and its only wound 2-3 turns back from where it causes iudling to increase and then hunt.....which is where it would be 'fluffing' on over-run, but nothing! The old girl pulls like a train so next step is a nice new 57i and we're ready for a bit of offroading....which is a dream in the auto, no fannying about changing gear all the time :thumb2

Hopefully Geoff you've got the cheaper Bosch MAF (which would be a clue in itself as they are drearily prone to failure compared to the Hitachi because of their self-cleaning arrangement).

the mil light is on and keeps saying bout engine coolant sensor but i cant clear it or read the code as how every1 else does so i am trying with the consult device to read and clear codes.

Ah , gotcha now :thumb2 On my consult gizmo there's a green led that flashes away when the ecu is on. Does yours?
