Whirring noise-might be clutch or gearbox

Terrano has developed a whirring, ticking noise that has got a bit worse in recent weeks. Seems related to the clutch as it only happens when clutch is engaged. Noise goes as soon as enough pressure is put on clutch pedal to disengage clutch. Can hear it clearly when moving off and it gets faster as pick up speed. Can't tell if noise is there on the open road.
Noise is coming from underneath the centre of the vehicle but can't find anything loose. No leaks. Oil levels all checked and good.The terrano does have a noisy release bearing already that you can hear when idling in neutral. But no problem with gear changes or slipping. Terrano is 02 model (reg 03) and looks like clutch and gearbox has been done before.
Would the clutch make this kind of whirring, ticking noise and if so do I need to do anything about it?

Yes could be clutch related, loose centre plate springs come to mind or maybe even the plate starting to break up, especially as you can hear it pulling away, but big job to pull gearbox just to have a look, you need an experienced ear to listen to it, Rick

Mine used to do this badly when I got it, a heavy whirring noise, worse with harden acceleration, seems to have cured itself (or hidden in exhaust noise now) :lol

I still notice a difference on idle pedal pressed or not.

Rick, getting the gearbox out for a look would be more trouble than it's worth for the present especially when all is running fine. Might be able to find an experienced ear somewhere to have a listen.
AlexD333, from what I have seen on other posts here layshaft bearing sounds a real possibility. Would a bit of Molyslip be in order?
Not sure if it is related or not but there is also a clunking noise every now and then that I can't pinpoint. Can't find anything loose, doesn't seem to be suspension related as it does not seem directly related to going over bumps and doesn't happen if I rock the vehicle vigirously. Noise seems to be coming from centre or back of the vehicle. Not brakes as had the drums off and all good.

Check the universal joints on the rear prop shaft.
Tgese are prone to wear, can cause vibration, and clunks when very worn.:thumb2

Check all rubbers underneath, the gearbox has a rubber support too identical to the exhaust oblong rubber :thumb2

The Layshaft as far as I know is not serviceable, you replace if it fails, but people have reported going on for 40/50k+ with same noise so would not panic at all :thumb2

They are quite noise trucks bear in mind

Rustic, good thinking about the universal joints on prop shaft but they seem fine. The clunking sound seems different to prop shaft clunk from worn joints.
AlexD333, will check the rubbers underneath the gearbox. Clunking sound might be related to them although the whirring more than likely isn't. If I get another 40/50K out of the truck I won't care after that as it will be off to the scrap man at that point.
