The wheels in picture near our pond are the ones we put on the vehicle a few years ago they are actually from an E Class model circa 2005 being 17" ones.

The wheels in the picture I took in the garage (wheel caps not present) are of a set of period 18" wheels that were an option - they are called Monoblock, they look like split rim as they have the small set screws but they are decoration.

The period 18" Monoblocks need refurbishing - not an issue we have a great local firm that do a good job at a fair price. The car is a smoother ride on the 17" rims they are 8.5J with 245/45 R17 tyres , the 18" rims are 8J with 225/40 R18 tyres the ride is a tad harsher.

I am torn between remaining period - fitting the Monoblocks or keeping the E Class wheels.

Anyone here got a view on which they prefer ?

Thats hard, I like the top ones, but they only just beat the lower ones. I would have been happy with the bottom ones and told you how good tgey look, if you had not shown the other picture.

I prefer the bottom set.
Just seem to suit the car better:thumb2

One vote for 18"

Bottom set of 18's all day!!!!!!! :bow :bow

So are you swayed by the "Period Appropriate" look ?

I have just had new tyres fitted to the 17" rims but TBH I am minded to have the 18" ones refurbished and fitted with identical rubber. (Uniroyal Rainsport 3 Asymetrics).

I have a thing about Asymetric tyres from the days when I would only drive on Michelin XAS tyres.

Thats one vote for the status quo !

So far the voting is 2:1 .

I prefer the top picture although if you had the period alloys polished!!! :naughty

Suz, with out any hesitation went for top. Does that make it 3 to 2?. Lol

To be practical (not to mention cost) I will have them powder coated the trouble with MB polished alloys is they come lacquered, water creeps into the film coating turning it opaque and the water corrodes the alloy especially if any salt gets in.

It's worse than 3 to 2 as the Gaffer is undecided.

The upper ones just strike me as a tad bling but they do look good if you forget about originality.

I plan to get the Monoblocks refurbished first before I finally decide the winner.

Bottom set for me, more AMG ish

The Monoblocks by MB were a prequel to AMG before they bought them out and brought the AMG name inhouse.

Originally AMG was a separate company formed by ex-employees who started up a tuning firm that was so successful MB bought them out. AMG engines now bear the signature of the assembling / final inspection actual engine builder. (or so they claim)

This is what I was told when I attended my MB induction course at Milton Keynes in 2004.

AMG = Aufrecht Melcher Grossaspach (Mercedes Benz racing) AMG" (Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach) is an abbreviation which stands for: Hans Werner Aufrecht (A) and Erhard Melcher (M) who were partners, while Aufrecht's birthplace of Großaspach (G) supplied the third letter in the company name.Mercedes-AMG GmbH, commonly ...
