what is the difference between torque and bhp I know torque is for pulling but how is it mesured

bhp is the rate at which an engine does work, expressed in horsepower. It is measured by the resistance of an applied brake the engine bhp is greater than the rear wheels bhp because of the effort needed to go through gearbox and diff etc. And Tourque is the measured ability of a rotating element, as of a gear or shaft, to overcome turning resistance.

I remember attending a Cummins Engine seminar many years ago and the speaker reiterated on the foreign group attending at that time and his inability to get over too them what torque was, his answer was when you have an early morning hard on and need to get it down for a pee, that is torque, Rick

Torque is a rotational force. It is measured in units of force multiplied by a unit of distance. For example, a foot pound is one pound of force at a distance of one foot. It can give you an indication of how strong an engine is (500 ft-lbs is a LOT of torque) or how tight you need to have a bolt.
