Which oil?

This is probably a stupid question.

In the manual for the car it says that for a given temperature range (and I have chosen -10 to +40) I can have either 20w 40 or 20w 50. I have no idea which one would be best, do any of you know? It's an old car so I would imagine there will be wear in the cylinders so would a thicker oil be better? If so, which is thicker, 40 or 50?

It appears that the 40 0r 50 applies to its performance at hight temperatures, and the 20 it's viscosity at a cold start. They also suggest that the wider the range betwwen the two numbers, the shorter the oils lifespan as they go 'out of grade' quicker because of the issues in making wide range oils.

Al that said, it woudl appear that 20w 40 would be the best, but i'm sure somone who knows better than me will be along to either agree or to put us both straight :thumb2

Theres actually quite a difference between 40 & 50 , on the 2 litre mondeos (mine was a year 2000) if you used 40 it breathers clogged up, use 30 it was fine :nenau I hadn't realised until then what a difference "one notch up" makes.

Cool, thanks. I have left a message on their answering machine, so hopefully will speak to them tomorrow morning. I was wondering if it is worth having a quick trawl round local motor factors to see if their prices would be better, but if you think they are competitive I might not bother.

Defo. My Zed only drinks Castrol Edge which is expensive - I couldn't match Opie's pricing anywhere and delivery was very quick. Also worth watching their offers which you'll get emailed if you subscribe or buy.

Yup, I'll stick with Opie. I need some help with choosing and I would feel bad if they answered my questions and then I bought from someone else. It will suit me better anyway to have the whole lot come from one place and be delivered in one go.

I read the manual carefully today, it says only use this grade at temperatures below 0 degrees C :doh

so tomorrow I'm changing for 10 -40 mineral oil :thumb2

Be interested to know if it improves. I do a lot of hard miles and very rarely need oil adding....

the splenetic 5-30 seemed very thin even when cold it appeared as thin as rape seed oil. Changed for 10-40 mineral oil and a new filter tonight (recommended for -20 degrees to +30) so i will see how it goes :thumb2

yes it will be fine, I would limit it to around 10 % of your fuel content, I run a 1975 Lister twin on old engine oil around 25% old oil, but the injectors need cleaning , regularly, Rick

Ah I used to work in the factory that made those, as did my grandfather and father.... now a sad shadow of its former glories... Sorry digressing a bit.
